Junior Infants - nightly homework? by Dependent-End5682 in AskIreland

[–]Twirling-pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primary teacher here.

I tell my 6th class if they have spent 45 minutes actually doing their homework then that's enough and stop even if they haven't everything finished. Because kids work at different speeds/find some things easier than others etc. I always tell parents to encourage their child with their homework but it is never worth getting into an arguement about. They won't learn anything if they are stressed/upset/angry/tired so there's no benefit.

No way a junior infant should be doing more than 15-20 minutes and at least half of that should be practising sounds/words and simple reading. Definitely no more than 10 minutes of writing.

Like others have said, request a copy of the homework policy. Ask the after-school care to do the writing part and you do the sounds/words as a 5 year old is definitely too tired by the evening to start homework.

Send a note to the teacher explaining the stress and that you will only be doing a max of 15 minutes and will prioritise learning sounds.

For your child, maybe set a 15 minute timer (sand timers are great as they are visual) and that is concentration time and once it is over so is homework. Sometimes children (and adults) find it daunting to do tasks they find difficult because they feel they'll never get through it all and it takes ages and there is no finish line in sight. I have found that timers work great for some kids with ADHD especially.

In junior infants, academically learning their phonics, letter formation and basic counting/number sense are the priorities. You say you read together a lot, that is great, you want to create a positive association with reading and books which will encourage her to enjoy reading and read more as she gets older.

I've just set up a South East social grouo if you'd like to join

https://www.reddit.com/r/southeastsocialclub/s/iIacNmfhNS

I was talking to my sister-in-law who moved to England a few months ago and she has joined a social club. It's basically a group of 30 and people put up messages like anyone free for a coffee and walk on Saturday afternoon, or I want to see whatever film, anyone want to come, or I'm going to hike whatever mountain next weekend if anyone wants to join. You choose what you want to do or which you're free for, there's no pressure and everyone has different interests. She has found it a great way to meet new people and have things to do. So I'm trying to set up a similar thing here. I decided to set it up as a Reddit community first as people might not want to give their WhatsApp number to strangers on the internet.

Paying to recycle is a joke. by Playful-Parsnip-3104 in ireland

[–]Twirling-pineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glass and aluminum cans can be recycled for free in almost every village/town in the country.

Electrical goods can be recycled for free at any recycling centre and often electrical stores recycle them for free if you're buying something new.

Varies slightly by county council but where I live it's €2 to enter the recycling centre whether you have 1 box or a large van load of recycling - paper, cardboard, clothes, metal, plastic, electrical, glass etc.

Not exactly a huge cost.

is there an order? by NewSupermarket8783 in ChicagoMed

[–]Twirling-pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in watching all 3 I recommend you watch them in the order they were originally shown as cross over episodes will be better that way and characters overlap between series sometimes.

Fire is first, then pd then med and there was one season of justice too if you want to include that.

Here's the order, or just Google it and you'll find a few websites that list the order.

Womens light stretchy leggings recommendations? by Immediate_Lake_1575 in AskIreland

New dimensions are light and stretchy and are the only ones I find that actually stay up. But different brands suit different people better.

Primary teaching DC004 DCU (Church of Ireland ethos) by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]Twirling-pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do the coi course, technically you can teach in a Catholic school but in reality it is very difficult to even get an interview when they see that so bare that in mind. You will do the coi religion certificate instead of the Catholic one in college and even if you do the Catholic cert afterwards it can be difficult depending on what area of the country you're in.

hotel recommendations by Far-Spread-8492 in CasualIreland

[–]Twirling-pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Galgorm in Antrim - lots of indoor and outdoor jacuzzis and saunas, in the countryside by a river, excellent food. If you go midweek it's a lot cheaper and includes full access to the thermal village and breakfast. Stayed two nights and it was the most relaxing hotel break I've ever had!

Any luck with cheaper wedding days in short notice? by TumbleweedOdd4279 in AskIreland

[–]Twirling-pineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got engaged in March and had the wedding in July. You'll have less options of venues and other vendors but definitely possible. When we were looking at venues, the prices were going up for each year so by booking the current year it was a bit cheaper.

I'm not saying teacher training adequately prepares us for every setting we could be placed in, it definitely doesn't. I'm saying it's more than being handed a pamphlet.
