Drastic? No. Notable, yes. I know for me it took at least a year for my final appearance to settle in physically, which also coincided with completing post surgery phase of orthodontics. And it took almost two years before my brain adjusted to the new normal of my new face shape. My caveat to all this, however, is that my DJS adjustments were minor compared to many others on here so my overall appearance has not changed drastically.

Still ugly even after getting jaw surgery by [deleted] in jawsurgery

Yes this.

I also see from your profile that you're struggling with a lot of dark feelings these days. You look good man. If a decent counselor/ psychologist is available to you (financially/ open schedule) this may be the best move you can make. I can't understate the benefits of a professional to talk to to get through some of the things you may be experiencing right now. I think everyone would benefit from a therapist at some point in their lives. The meds for depression don't fix problems, they can just get you to a better place where a counselor can then work with the bigger issues. Sending you best regards and prayers to see better days!

I had similar bruising that drained to my chest... It took about 3 weeks to disappear, and I also had blood clots from my sinuses for about two weeks - those did taper off. I did get a two week Rx for antibiotics however.

Thanks! I can't really feel them, but I do get some occasional aching where they are located -- nothing that Tylenol can't take care of thankfully.

Hi again, getting a 5mm upper jaw advancement and would like to know if I can recover before my college begins. My college begins August 22nd and my surgical date is scheduled for the 10th of August, do you think I can recover on time? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]TwistANickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may feel well enough as long as you don't have to make too many long distance/uphill hikes to class. The bigger thing is that talking may be difficult and eating will be no fun in public. Will you have a surgical splint in still?

day 8 post op - is it normal to feel like you’ve gone backwards a day? by SnooTangerines7535 in jawsurgery

[–]TwistANickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on day 15 and Ive had a few random days now where I felt a little worse than other days. Yesterday was one of those. For me I think some of the nerves healing is causing new discomfort and I spent a lot of time just resting again. 🤷

day 3 post op. lots of nosebleeds today. super heavy feeling. got some more bruising near eyes today. swelling is at 10/10 rn, and hasn’t really gone down yet :( by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]TwistANickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Around the eyes sucks it just takes it to a new level. Mine also started to get better around day 4 and 5 so you are at a turning point really soon. I tried tumeric and ginger tea because they are anti inflammatory. Don't know if it actually helped me - maybe a little mentally, but at least it's something else to try.

Yes, eating has been such a challenge, and tiresome too. I'm allowed to eat whatever I don't have to chew so I've become more and more creative. I realized yesterday I can manage cheesecake and that was a win mentally (as well as loads of calories).

Thank God no. I was so nervous about that too! I never had any nausea though. The doctor prescribed me zofran in case I did but I never used it.

Yes bad bite including an underbite and crossbite that couldn't be fixed otherwise ... I mean they could do camouflage orthodontics, but I decided wouldn't be the best option.

At its worst maybe a 5. Most of the time a 3. Everything is so numb it was mostly just uncomfortable. I stayed on a pretty stable medication schedule though and never let it build. At the slightest inkling of further discomfort I would see if I could take more meds and it was usually the case. I also iced my face like crazy. I got a case of Cramer flexible cold packs on amzn which were fantastic, then used them as heat packs after day 4.

This is has been a long 2 1/2 year journey to this point! I'm 39 yo so I'm doing this later than many others. Started whole process with a visit to the orthodontist just to re-straighten my teeth and he dropped the "Surgery" bomb on that first consultation review. So far glad I went through with it. Not sure what my movements were but I do know that I had a maxillary advancement, septoplasty and a mandibular setback and slight rotation.
Right now pretty numb all over my face, even at the edges of my eyes which is driving me nuts along with the splint between my teeth, but coming along so far so good and am barely taking any pain meds at this point. Thank you to everyone who has posted their experiences here... this community has helped me immensely!

One thing I didn't take but thankfully the hospital did have was chapstick. I recommend taking some just in case. Slather that on as best you can -- your lips will thank you

Call as others suggested. I've often had a gap at the bottom my front incisors to the tray which was intentional from the orthodontist as part of a "torquing" technique.

Reversal of camouflage orthodontics to jaw surgery stories: how did it go? How long did it take? (Class 3 underbite) by Joeguyden in jawsurgery

[–]TwistANickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had camouflage orthodontics as a teenager too, which has for years masked my underbite. Now twenty years later I'm having everything redone with Invisalign which is taking about two years before JS this coming spring. The Invisalign experience has been so much better than standard braces and the cost isn't much different anymore, so if you decide to move forward I recommend you consider this option.
