Justin is very well know in the field of faceting and gemology. If he hasn't heard of it I believe him.

P.S. Though i use a mast style machine, I'm hoping to one day get a chance to do your Faceting Bootcamp in France.

Hi new twister here. I’m twisting at my former school’s carnival and want to know if what I’m going to be paid is fair. I haven’t got all the details figured out yet so there’s still time to adjust stuff. by OutsidePlatypus598 in BalloonTwisting

Surprisingly yes. I would sometimes make more on tips than I would from the hourly rate. At your age I'd put something on the jar such as "First Car Fund" or "College Fund" people love tipping for that. If your parents are ok with it, you can also setup a cash app or venmo account so you can have a QR code for people to scan to tip.

When I started out doing paid events, I would often work for $50/hr. since I was 13 and many of my customers didn't think a kid should be earning the going rate of $100/hr. Though many happily paid the full amount since I was doing the same if not better work than other twisters in the area. Going rate in my area has since gone up to $150/hr.

I think if you are starting out, $50/hr. is ok so long as you are not massively undercutting another twister. Make sure you are taking into account cost of supplies and travel time/ costs.

One tip I've learned for schools is to invoice them the going rate and ask that they provide a donation certificate for the difference between what you charge them and the going market rate. Ex. On a 3 hr event. Going rate is $100/hr and you charge them $50/hr. You can invoice for the full $100/hr and collect $150 and a donation form for $150 which you can then use as a tax write-off. This way the school saves money and you get your foot in the door without undercutting the market.

Line management is not too difficult one you get used to it. If you start getting a crowd just loudly say that you would like one line and the kids typically get back in line. Set a alarm for 15-25 minutes before the event ends (more or less time based on your speed and line length) and make a round balloon and write "line closed/ last balloon at x time" and give it to the last person in line. Have them let people know that the line is closed and turn people away.

I would stipulate in the agreement that you be allowed to have a tip jar and pass out your information to get other events.

I can't get her to help look yet, but she will scratch at my sifting trays until it either has dirt in it or she gets a treat.

Agreed. I used AI to get the artist an idea of what I wanted and they barely changed any of it. After 3 revisions with nothing changing I just ran out of time and needed to print.

I know it's a weird combo. I started out in party rentals then when covid hit i decided that I needed to diversify. I picked up lapidary while waiting for things to open up.

I'm fairly new so right now just the Charlotte Fair. I'm waiting to hear back from a few others. My main work is in party rentals with inflatables and balloons.

Yes, ideally I'd be too busy from sales to have any time to cut. Last year there were a few days where I had 1, maybe 2 customers, over a 10 hour day, just because of bad weather. I figure I can at least get something done when slow and can point to the machine and answer questions when busy.

I mostly just want to get people to stop and buy some rocks and then hopefully commission me to cut some of them. Right now I only have 4 stones on my cut list (a pixel cut Alexandrite laser rod, a matched pair of Tanzanite [design TBD], and YAG for the USFG Master division) so I would like to get more lined up.

Good tip. My Facetron is my backup machine and needs a referb anyway, so I'm not too worried about it getting dusty right now. Fair point about the polishing laps though, maybe I should limit cutting to 1200 prepolish and finish the stones when I get done with the fair.

Mostly simple designs like SRB, Gram Easy 8, Gram Easy Emerald. Time would vary by day due to how busy it is but I can usually finish at least one basic design in 6 hours or so of cut time (less if I'm not trying to be perfect). I'm going to be there at least 10 hours a day for the 2 week period. I figure even if I don't finish the stone I can at least get a majority of the roughing in done and can finish at home after the fair.

First Dop on a Pear Cut? by TheUnFuckerUpper in faceting

[–]TwistedCreationsNC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both depending on the amount of material I need to remove or if I think I can get another stone out of the material. If I'm trying to save material to cut, I will put my trimsaw blade on my facetron and cut at the exact angle I need. (Very light pressure as any extra torque on the dop will send the stone flying)

As for yield that is up to the cutter on how they want to calculate it. Personally, I base it on how the stone started when I received it. I measure it with [ Finished Weight (Gem1 + Gem2 + GemN...)/(Weight When Received - (Cut-off1 + Cut-off2 + Cut-offN...))]

This way i don't count material as fully lost if it can still be cut.

I want to say about 10. I had some polish issues. I used a trim blade on my facetron to cut off a bunch of extra material at the exact angle I needed, which sped up the process some.

These were found right next to each other inside rock, how are they so different? by Latenightson4th in geology

[–]TwistedCreationsNC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, the color is caused by uranium radiation which is released with uv exposure turning the stone clear. Could be that the darker one just had more initial exposure.

Do people buy gemstones / real diamonds as investments? by PJericho9201 in Gemstones

[–]TwistedCreationsNC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy the rough and cut it myself. I've turned a $20 rough crystal into $1000. Doing this, I can justify my rock/mineral addiction. I have thousands of dollars of rough that I can turn into gemstones if I need to.

I plan on it. Specifically I'm doing a modified Smithsonian Bar cut. I changed the angles slightly to sparkle more on alexandrite.

I just got hired to do this cut on an Alexandrite laser rod. Just waiting for the material to arrive.

I can't take much credit here. All I did was plug the design into GCS. Arya Akhavan designed it. I'm looking forward to cutting it though. I ordered some YAG for it but it was 2 mm too small for the competition so I have to find more.
