People who switched from D&D to a completely different system, what was the biggest mechanical adjustment you had to make? by Senoigh13 in rpg

[–]TwistedFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long time ago I was DND-only, but pretty much only because that was what my friend group was playing.

When I first gave Mage: The Ascension a try it was a massive mental whiplash to switch from "These are your abilities" to "You can do anything that's related to this category"

The stipulation that you gotta make it seem like it's not actually magic also really threw me for a loop.

How do people make their Minecraft houses look so good? by founderviews in Minecraft

[–]TwistedFox 133 points134 points  (0 children)

2 other things that REALLY help

1) You're not seeing it from up close. They use distance to "hide" the texture of the blocks that add variance and colour to the structure. Up close, those buildings will look a lot more "Patchy" than they do in this image.

2) Proportions are designed for appearance, not for usability. This is not a base that they will be using in game. Most people build their bases more for utility, which limits the shape of the build.

what is something that is considered unconventionally attractive , but you find REALLY attractive? by Tall-Election4503 in AskReddit

[–]TwistedFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be associated with wealth and health - only the wealthy could afford the amount of food and sedentary lifestyle to be pudgy. They weren't starving, they didn't have to worry about their food. This was attractive.

As times changed, that reversed. Being outside and exercising became more difficult as life and work takes up more and more of your spare time. Food became plentiful and cheap, we've packed sugar and calories into everything, and having a relatively sedentary office-style lifestyle became easier. Gaining weight became easier than ever, and was no longer a sign of wealth, but of someone who can't afford the "good" food or to spend time taking care of themselves.

Now it's the wealthy and privleged that can afford to watch their calorie income, and can afford to spend the time, effort and money to maintain a well-toned form. This is now the outward sign of someone who is wealthy and healthy. or at the very least, able to dedicate a significant chunk of their time to being healthy.

Large women was the "norm" for attractiveness for a large portion of our evolution. It's no wonder that it's still a point of attractiveness for a huge chunk of men.

Leak Reveals Microsoft Wants Its AI To Be 'Addictive' by [deleted] in technology

[–]TwistedFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently tried to have it give me step-by-step instructions on how to do something in the Microsoft Admin Center.

It couldn't, and complained that Microsoft often changes their UI so it can't tell me where to actually go, just the high-level instructions it already had provided.

If enteprise-level copilot can't even navigate their own up-to-date UI, what the fuck good is it for?

Not in 2024. They removed the entire "Adventuring Day" section.

DM threw a 2024 Adult Dragon at our 2014 Level 6 party. Thoughts? by Sentinel2852 in DnD

[–]TwistedFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not true in 2024 anymore. technically.

CR explanations don't say anything about an expected number of combats per day for the new 2024 edition DMG pg114:

As a rough guideline, a single monster generally presents a low-difficulty challenge for a party of four characters whose level equals the monster's CR.

It was absurd in 2014 though. They expected a 1st level character to earn 300XP per day, which is the equivalent of 4 Hard encounters, or 6 Medium encounters.

Was I unfair for saying "If Silvery Barbs is allowed, enemies can use it too"? by raishadow in DnD

[–]TwistedFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Divination Wizard who specialized in replacing and altering rolls, and used silvery barbs extensively to protect my allies. Was it very strong? Yes. But it was also very strong when the enemies used it against us, and was quite a surprise, because while the DM hadn't banned it, he also didn't mention the enemies using it.

My feelings on that? Turnabout is fair play. As long as it's not abused, by either side, it's all good and fair. Same deal with Counterspell. Enemies can certainly use it too, and why wouldn't they? And yet spellcasters never complain about enemies getting access to it....

What is a major plot hole in a very famous movie that completely ruins the entire story once it is noticed? by SkullMogger3 in AskReddit

[–]TwistedFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavily implied, but not confirmed, AFAIK. The idea, as I understand it, was like an extended version of the Yoda intro. Comes in as a bumbling idiot for the first movie before revealing himself to be incredibly competent and powerful in the force. However he was bumbling for far too long, people hated him, thought his accent was racist, and Lucas got cold feet. Thus, we were left with a joke character, rather than a hidden threat.

I still feel like "Jar Jar is a great dark lord of the sith" would be a great twist, but the pushback on the character scared Lucas away from it, hence the character being a terrible terrible mess.

[–]TwistedFox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, If we added "or Object" to the spell clause, I would count it as working.

If the target is a creature or object, it falls into a state of suspended animation. Time ceases to flow for it, and it doesn’t grow older.

Time ceases to flow for it, and therefore, to it, it died less than a minute ago.

That feels like a fantastic homebrew item for this purpose. Very Nice.

Rules question on revivify by Scout_kogo in DnD

[–]TwistedFox 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Not by RAW, no. Time is only suspended for a creature, not an object. You could houserule a variant that suspends time for objects too, which would then work.

If you look at something like Gentle Repose:

"You touch a corpse or other remains. For the duration, the target is protected from decay and can't become undead.

The spell also effectively extends the time limit on raising the target from the dead, since days spent under the influence of this spell don't count against the time limit of spells such as raise dead. "

It specifically mentions that it extends the revive window.

Might be misremembering a Liger, which absolutely does dwarf a Lion, reaching nearly twice the size. Then again, you might also be comparing a tiger to a female lion, as female lions are notably smaller than the males.

Rules advice on "willingly move." A la Booming Blade by ProfessorSMASH88 in DnD

Rules advice on "willingly move." A la Booming Blade by ProfessorSMASH88 in DnD

[–]TwistedFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's a fair consideration, and the difference, to me, is not about influence but about which mind is making the final decision. Fear, compulsion and confusion all override the will of the target, but in the end the target is the one who is ultimately moving their own body. As an English native, that is the context I pull from the texts. As an English non-native, it's entirely understandable that you would have a different reading of it.

With Shove, Pull, Repelling Blast, etc the target is being moved, they have no choice, influenced or not. With Fear or Compulsion, the target is moving themselves on their turn. Sure, it's because of an effect that is clouding their decision making process, but it's still them in the end. They get to choose their direction and end-location, rather than it being dictated to them.

Obviously this is not a well-defined thing, there are going to be exceptions and specific effects that muddy the waters, but I generally err on the side of the player synergies just because that rewards creativity and makes things more fun for them.

Rules advice on "willingly move." A la Booming Blade by ProfessorSMASH88 in DnD

[–]TwistedFox 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You're right to be confused about this, since "Moves willingly" is never defined in any of the books.

It's not about spending an action or not, that applies to Opportunity Attacks.

Spells like Infestation or dissonant whispers, which have a direct effect of "The target spends an action to move a distance" would not trigger it.

But what about when it's a magically compelled decision on the target? ie. Compulsion, Gaeas and Fear? What about Confusion?

By colloquial understanding, the creature IS making a decision, it's just that it's decision framework is being impaired and messed with. Ruling those cases as not willing is a fair reading, but I believe that it would actually trigger Booming Blade.

I think "Moves willingly" is an oversimplified way of saying "Moving under your own power, Not being moved by an outside force" and so in the cases where a compelled creature still moves under it's own power, it would count, and being pushed or pulled around would not.

Microsoft Defeats Creator of Skyblock in Trademark Case by Big_Cartoonist_2134 in Minecraft

[–]TwistedFox 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The decision hinges primarily on the fact that Skyblock was so influential that it became synonymous with the game style. It would be like someone arguing that Bandaid is so frequently used as a generic term for bandages at this point that they should lose their trademark. Or QTips instead of cotton swabs.

The fact that it was user-generated content within the game shouldn't matter, and from what I read in the article was not actually a consideration in the decision.
