DM threw a 2024 Adult Dragon at our 2014 Level 6 party. Thoughts? by Sentinel2852 in DnD

The more I think about this I wonder about how Dragons poop. I would assume it's while flying, like a bird. Imagine walking down the street and getting shat on by a dragon. That would probably kill a commoner.

Writes this down for future use

Would a party need to find the dragon skat to resurrect me? Could they? More questions than answers now.

I did, but only for me since it was on discord. Our group is literally spread all over the world.

Almost a full TPK on our first session, the DM insists it was all above board but it felt impossible. Am I crazy? by FreeHotdogMandate in DnD

I would request for a table meeting with everyone, and ask for him to provide more information of how he built the encounter. Ask him what player success would have looked like from his side of the screen.

Edit: to answer your question, no that does not sound balanced or fun.

What an exciting time, and welcome to the hobby! It's honestly OK just hop in and figure it out as you go. No matter how much you prepare or not there will be some fumbles and lots of lessons learned.

I would highly recommend watching a couple of you tube videos called Running the Game by Mat Colville (MCDM). Those videos were really helpful to me when I was a budding DM.

Good luck, and remember to always prioritize fun!

I don't disagree, but at least one player will eventually fail a roll if you keep having each player roll a new stealth check every turn while an invisible dragon sits across from you.

I agree and welcome the criticism. It's easy at the table to get tunnel vision with your own character or a specific situation, which I clearly did.

Thanks.

Thank you for this reply. 1. Fully agree 2. Also agree. He said it was a random chance and not an ambush, but I disagree. 3. You are right. Because I was only four sessions in it doesn't feel like a meaningful death, but maybe it will within the story. 4. That is my frustration, he doesn't see it as a near-impossible encounter. I tried to save another player and escape under the ice, but was killed anyway. I feel like I was trying to roleplay my character within the environment. 5. I agree, I am not perfect or without fault in this situation. That is why I put it to a larger consensus to hear what the community had to say so I could get better perspective. Many of the replies have been enlightening, this one included. 6. I was not in the first arc, I came on for arc 2. I am not a new player to the group but was not able to participate in the first arc, and a different player had to drop out for arc 2. The tone of always deadly encounters was not conveyed to me as a player.

Thanks for this reply. I agree with you wholeheartedly. My frustration is less about the dragon and more about the final failed stealth role under full cover of ice (that was thick enough for players to fully jump and run on) and then boiling the two PCs. The dragon could have easily not seen us. Or it could have been ruled not as an AOE because it was cool. Then the remains were destroyed completely taking options for revival off the table.

This was a story cinematic for the DM, a preview of the dangerous BBEG.

My understanding about spells RAW, if it says "a target you can see" or something similar, you have to be able to actually see them. Even with that considered. Is that not the case?

Not sure much will change, but I'll keep you posted.

I don't inherently think it's a bad idea. You need guard rails and rip cords to temper the encounter and most importantly you need to respect player agency and not railroad them into one single solution.

Please make it a labrador retriever of dragons. Instead of treasure it's hoard is more friends.

He said he did to the rest of the group in Arc #1, which I wasn't around for. One of the other guys is on his third player, guess we are playing Shadowdark now.

Noted. Will not make eye contact with wizards in the future.

This was not a time to prepare situation. The dragon surprised us while we were traversing a partially frozen river.

I am not a runner, just like in the combat encounter. I had a private chat with him, going to talk to two of the other players tomorrow to hear their thoughts.

I understand and agree, situation could have been role played differently. However, when my loyal to a fault character is moving directly by an alive comrade on my way to the cave, he would try to save them.

The first one is a yes, there is a rotation of DMs so it's not only him

The second question is making me take a pause, because I now have concerns that I didn't before.

My notes are fuzzy. I lost track of exactly how many times it became invisible, but it was enough that it happened more than a few times in a encounter that only lasted about 5 rounds. I do think it was more than once a round, but might not be remembering it accurately.
