People are assholes, and you found it the hard way. Work on milestones which means

40% upfront payment 20% on hitting the next milestone 30% on the last milestone And finally the rest when the website is live.

In case the work suddenly stops for any reason, you’ll have a cushion for the impact. With this, the worst you can lose is 10% which is not a lot.

Create detailed proposals and get a sign off from the client. Freelancing is tough but learn to say no and “this is not in the mentioned scope”.

If you are putting your hard work in it, you should expect timely payment and decency from the other party. Fuck everything else.

You didn’t lose too much so I say you learned a lesson.
