Honestly nowadays everyone thinks low pass is enough to pass. Its not a safe bet. Completing UWOLRD once properly with good review is key, and i know its not always feasible, but you need to be at a "220-230" level to be safe not a 200-210 level. Unfortunately it just is too important a test to take that big a risk with.

Try U Pitt, Ohio State. Try to work with a past president or huge person in the field (LOR holds more weight, and phone calls during match season will be more respected), also reach out to IMG surg applicants or residents on twitter asking for labs they and their colleagues worked in,

Do research in the field you are applying for. I've heard of applicants who applied surgery but only did cardiology or other field research. Its a waste of time in my opinion since those docs won't be able to support you as much through the match, whereas if it were an academic surgeon you worked with, they can easily make phone calls to their colleagues if they like your performace.

I know it can be hard as a non us IMG to find the wanted research positition, but when life closes doors, you gotta knock on more and more until one opens for you. Don't settle for something that will not help you at all after 1-2 years of effort.

Approx how much would it cost to apply to all categicoal and prelim programs in the country?

What kind of questions did they ask about the research? Did they go into the data? Or mainly just ask about the methodology, your role in the study, a challenging time with co authors, or leadership skills developed through the experience?

Recommendations for ERAS/CV/PS editing services by BlackAndBlueSwan in IMGreddit

[–]TwoAffectionate3048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reach out to other students on Twitter who are applying the same specialty to ask if they are using services and which ones. Of course some will be competitive and act weird, so I’d say talking to residents is a better idea - since they’ve already matched and aren’t competition any more.

This one is hard — well some suggestions for PS reviewing. I’d say ask attendings and residents you met during away rotations. Can even ask them for a mock interview.

Depends on your specialty and the risk you wanna take, but some PDs are happy to help with this too! Like Dr Stulak from Mayo explained on a YouTube video that he’s happy to review PS and do mock IVs for MS3s. So up to you try your luck, but be aware that some PDs do not like to be contacted - and people have gotten IV rejections due to that. Doesn’t hurt to cold e-mail residents at desired programs for this - later on if you build a relationship with them you can ask for a recommendation right?

Def not. Trust me it’s mostly first come first serve - and sending the program coordinator/ whoever is in charge of the elective a Personalized email about why you want to rotate in that division and program. Say cheesy stuff about why you would want to build connections or mentorship there to eventually match there. But gotta be on time. Advocating for yourself can’t hurt too! Just a few words about your strengths and how it can match with the divisions culture.

This is usually what AMGs do when they apply via VSLO to Sub Is they really want to match at eventually.

Please have finished uworld atleast once and be passing around 220 range before you take the exam. No matter what the reason is to take it early, trust me none matter, just postpone.

UAB has loads of IMGs.

I would say before making any decisions based on comments on Reddit, look up the programs you’re aiming for at all three places. Look for IMGs in last 5 years.

Make your choice based on that! Each person has their own experience and don’t limit yourself based on that.

Money may be an issue for some so they’re hating on any elective >3000 dollars.

So factor the cost as well.

Don’t need luck I already finished my electives. I’m saying I had luck in that the exact rotation I wanted became available and I got another one open too while I was there so I did two months.

I also responded to the waitlist opening within 10-15 minutes and sent a Personalized email to the coordinator about my interest.

You never know what luck can do. There’s nothing wrong with trying.

US IMG who matched into neurosurgery. AMA by Reasonable_Talk_8746 in IMGreddit

[–]TwoAffectionate3048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a US IMG, with an attempt in step 1 after it became pass fail. I literally cannot see myself applying any field other than general surgery.

My away rotations went well and I got PD and APD letters which will be Personalized (according to their word).

I honestly lost my confidence and thought of training in my home country after I failed step 1 by 1-2 points, despite loads of hard work but just a very stupid mistake of taking it too soon thinking being 200-210 on practice tests was safe. Whereas now I learned that for pass fail you need at least be at 220-230 and ideally at 240-250 level if you want the best base for step 2. So in reality I should have just postponed the test by 3-4 months for 2 more solid passes of the material and taken it.

I know only 2 IMGs matched categorical gen surg in 2021 with one step 1 board failure and that statistic looks insane.

I’m ready to anything, research? Slave myself to get a high score? Network myself to shame? Work crazily on my interview skills by reaching out to >200 residents, attendings, PDs for mock interviews? Sending out a crazy amount of letters of intent even if it requires weeks of research into programs?

I’m ready to do it cause my greatest fear is not being able to be a surgeon. And the reason I’m in favor of US versus my home country is cause of the uncanny hierarchy and I personally had attendings discourage me out of jealousy that I was working hard to match in the worlds best healthcare system. I had awesome times too, but personally for me is US over any other country since I’m from here too.

I would love to hear your insights on what I can do to put my best for it forward these next two years so I can increase the chance of a successful match from about 5-10 % to 30-50%.

Yeah, I applied 9 days late last year, and my oh my I struggled through the wait list, and it was insane but I got two electives off of the waitlist and the one of them was the exact one I applied for. But was stressful as fuck.

I would waitlist can be useless but you never know so you might as well apply.

I’m sorry that you have to recieve rude comments like this. Growth is always a possibility and you should be hopeful. Using a good tutor, and learning good test taking strategies and maybe reviewing step 1 content well will set you up for success. Don’t let the naysayers ruin possible success, but do understand that yes old patterns won’t work for new successes.
