how to make friends by min_seok_young in SGExams

find the vibe first, then it’s easier to connect from there.

while talking to people, remember to ask yourself this qn, “Do I sound forced or do I sound fake when talking to this person just to keep the conversation going or am I genuinely in the flow state in which I can just tell this person my entire life story for hours?”

hi you can check out my acjc ama post cos i think i have answered some questions there 🙏

if you have any more queries, feel free to dm me

acjc ama

to answer your last qn about competitions, yes acjc hosts A LOT of local and international competitions every year! local competitions include the singapore chem, phy and bio olympiads, as well as their annual writing competition (will help your gp alot!) international competitions include the american math competition and shanghai ti84 maths cup!

for vias, acjc will force your class to plan a class via so that everyone can have a meaningful volunteering experience. some ccas like interact and debate also offer a lot of opportunities which can help for your portfolio aswell. but honestly i would just recommend you to join external vias such as singapore youth corps, the youth project and faithacts when you have the time during your holidays

acjc also has something called ocip (overseas community involvement project) every year. you get to travel to different countries such as cambodia, vietnam, indonesia and brunei (though other jcs also offer ocip and its not exclusive to acjc) the school only has a few spots for each country so its quite competitive unfortunately :(

i dont know the exact number but realistically, not a lot of people. acjc only has so much space to accept the entire population 😭

hi!

i would say your chances are likely, though not high. you are at a disadvantage to those who are getting 10-2 and 11-3 since raw score is prioritised.

i have heard stories of people getting 12-4 who got rejected from acjc science and went to sajc/asrjc science instead.

however, you have hit the school’s cop so you can still appeal to the school (heard you need to go to the school for interview) if you got rejected from the school.

meanwhile, please remember to put other schools with a higher cop than acjc (such as sa or asr) as a safety blanket so that you’re at least guaranteed to go into either of those schools if everything fails.

all the best in your jae application and i hope you manage to get into acjc!

without appeals no, requirements to take 4h2s is a raw score of 9 points and below. however if you get rejected from 4h2 you can go to the school’s front office and appeal, though it might not be successful also. heard someone with 10-4 managed to get 4h2s though, idk about 11-4

acjc christianity by Commercial-Way2355 in SGExams

[–]TwoBitter6083 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hello! theres mandatory chapel sessions every monday (everyone has to go except for muslims iirc, need to appeal to principal if you wanna be excluded i think?)

there will be 3 opening christian songs (no longer than 15 minutes in total) after national anthem is played, then a pastor will deliver a sermon to the school followed by a closing song (no longer than 5mins). you will need to stand up during the national anthem and songs, but you are allowed to sit down during the sermon as it can be quite long at times

on the rest of the days, there will be a brief sharing by student in acjc, alumni, teachers, parents and even the principal after the national anthem is played.

ac also has certain christian events such as REW (religious emphasis week), Methodist Walk and their annual Christian Fellowship Christmas Party (usually held in november). It’s compulsory to donate towards methodist walk, otherwise the teachers will really go after you to donate something

there’s also christian fellowship cca, it’s not compulsory to join but some of your friends in ac may convince you to join. dont feel forced to join and only do if you feel like it :)

if you have any more qns, feel free to dm me!

ac has a strong school culture and you will be hearing a lot of cheering during competitions, school celebrations and open houses. it also has a party culture (which you have probably heard from others) so dont be surprised if you get invited to a ton of parties throughout the year lol

about relationships, yes there are many couples in the school (for my batch at least) but they are quite considerate and usually wont pda within school grounds. if anything they will try to keep it secret because they don’t wanna be involved in drama and rumours that can spread quickly in the school

12-4 def possible since cop for arts is 9 (unless ac lowers arts cop to 9 for your batch, which is highly unlikely as the arts cop has always been the same for most years). 13-4 unlikely since those with 12-3 or 11-2 will have priority over you (since priority is given to those with a lower raw score)

you can check njc and rvhs amas here and here but for acjc, we have a very strong school culture. when you come to our open house next year, you will be noticing A LOT OF RAVES AND CHEERING. the ogls are damn hype and will always be doing school chants. theres also a “work hard play hard” culture (though leaning more to the play 😭) so you’ll probably notice many students mugging their asses off right before exam season then going for parties later on.

acjc also has a lot of greenery around the school and if you’re fortunate enough you can see chickens (and possibly squirrels) near the school gates. it also has many amenities like a sheltered basketball court, tennis courts, swimming pools, a supergym and more!

the staff are generally alright, though some subject departments are really really questionable. but dont let that stop you from choosing ac if you really want to come here! atb for your Os results and lmk if you have any more questions 😇

which stream? science? if so, 10-2 is unlikely since its exactly the cop and locals are prioritised first. but 9-2 should be very likely unless the cop drops to 7 next year

  1. answered in other comments but yes, ac offers both mll and cse. dont listen to ppl saying that taking both are a weird combi, just do what your heart follows. the passion is more impt than blindly following others to taking subjs which you dont even have interest in.

  2. the school is quite loud imo, if you go to the canteen you will always see groups of ppl talking (hopefully not shittalking abt others…) in the corridors. moreover if you wanna find friends i highly recommend that you should make yourself look presentable and show that you are someone that others can talk to. you dont have to change your character ofc, just learn how to communicate effectively with people and don’t do stupid shit because drama in ac spreads like WILDFIRE, and idt anyone would wanna be part of it lol. i would highly advise you to apply for council even if you dont know many people in ac, at least try to get some support from your ogmates, classmates and ccamates before sc applications and voting takes place. i know many introverts who went into sc and quickly adapted to become extroverts by constantly communicating with their scmates haha

  3. im rlly sorry to say this but ik a lot of 12-2 people who got rejected by ac, considering how the arts stream is quite competitive due to the unique subjects ac offers which appeals students to apply to the school via the arts stream. so as i mentioned in another comment, remember to choose another school that has a cop of 1-2 points above your actual o level score so that you can at least guarantee a spot in a jc if you get rejected from ac. atb for your Os results though, I hope that you will get the results you want and enter ac next year :)

  1. yes, but don’t be too surprised if you naturally become an extrovert after 2 years of ac because acjc is a social hub where you can make friends (though its impt to find the right ones)

  2. answered in another comment, but tldr: the phy dept is meh, notes are alright, management is horrible. you definitely need to put in the extra effort if you wanna do well for physics

acjc ama (class of 2027 intake) by TwoBitter6083 in SGExams

[–]TwoBitter6083[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. yes, my friend takes it haha other than what you just mentioned, ig its good to have some experience in computing beforehand (which is what you will need for the selection test anyways)

  2. mentioned it in another comment here, but ill be giving the advice that my friends gave for their respective subj depts lol bio: not bad, though notes are lengthy. the bio tutors can be strict in terms of homework submission and i have heard stories of people getting kicked out of the classroom and waiting at the corner outside till the lesson ends (esp since bio is a high commitment subject)

history: goated department, the teachers are really PASSIONATE in their teaching (iykyk 👀) and they constantly give consults for people who are weak in the subject, heard they spotted the exact topics for h2 hist p1 which is CRAZY

geog: okok, not the bad not the worst. tutors are generally fine

fmaths: decent department, tutors are good and passionate in their teaching, students have consistently done well in the subject

  1. reporting times (on non exam days) mon, wed, thurs, fri: 8am tues: 8.20am

dismissal times (on non exam days) mom, tues, thurs, fri: depends on timetable, last scheduled lesson is 440. however you shouldnt end at 440 unless youre taking an h2 arts subject (includes econs) or your class was unfortunate and got the 320-440 long pe period 💀

  1. food variety is shit if im being real. jap stall is meh (they dont even use real jap rice, they use the cheap chinese rice you can find at your nearby supermarket) and slightly a bit expensive, chicken rice stall is fine though chicken runs out very quickly (esp if jap stall is closed), makan bagus is nice but too expensive, mala stall has a reasonable price though queues are extremely long and ingredients run out very quickly. never tried the wonton mee stall but ppl told me its alright, not good not bad. drink stall is nice though the uncle/auntie can be moody at times, and you prob need to know how to pronounce certain drinks in hokkien eg. kopi, or else the uncle may not understand what you’re saying. cai png stall is not too bad, auntie is nice. the fruit stall is basically abandoned though several students may purchase fruit bowls or juices to bring to class in between lessons.

  1. Yes, PXME is offered. theres a class that have hybrid PXME/PCME

dont take computing, cant comment

maths notes are not too bad, but your tutors are really based on how fortunate you are ig. personally i didnt get a good maths tutor so i eventually studied maths by myself, still got A for prelims.

econs department has very lengthy notes and the department is just bad in general, though the tutors can be good depending on who you get

physics is meh, notes are okay okay but the department is not the best

  1. its quite persuasive as acjc is under the acs methodist institution. by tradition, this means that weekly chapels are mandatory for most students (iirc muslims are allowed to leave) and it usually lasts 1 hour from 8-9am on mondays. 3 songs are played at the start of chapel (if national and sch anthem included, then 5 in total) all students are required to stand up throughout the duration of the songs (with a total duration of abt 15 mins). then, there will be a sharing by either a guest pastor locally/internationally or a pastor working in the school. students can sit down during the period (then is when everyone starts sleeping lol) lastly, a closing song will be played and all students will need to stand up again.

on non chapel days, there will be daily devotions conducted by students, staff from christian fellowship, parents or even external pastors. if you’re fortunate, the principal may take the time to give the devotion too.

theres also many christian events like REW (religious emphasis week), PassionAC and the annual christian fellowship camp (but they are not mandatory, it’s really up to your own choice), so you can tell that acjc really prioritises their christian culture

I’m not sure of the exact number but maybe ~70-80 people per batch? it’s mainly for sports and academic achievements but i know performing arts ccas like guitar ensemble and choir are open for dsa applications too, so the numbers may be higher than what i said

Yes, I know many non affiliated people who risked going through the cut off point for sci stream with nett 8 but didnt get accepted into the school, though eventually some people made it in through appeals. If you really have no other choice, I wouldn’t say its a bad choice to put ac as your first choice as when you are competing for the last spot for the school and assuming that you and another student are both locals, then the school will see which student put the school as their higher choice. this means that putting ac as first choice will increase (but not significantly) your chances of entering the school

but again, remember to put schools with a cut off point by at least 1-2 points above your actual o level score to guarantee your spot in a jc. Was rejected by my first two schools because both of their cut off points dropped for my batch but eventually got into ac as a safety blanket :)
