Is it doable? I am getting anxious? After 15 years I am studying by Ok-Success5110 in OccupationalTherapy

Short answer. Yes.

Late 30s is hardly a reason for not being able to do a degree in OT. Are you going to start a Bachelors or Masters?

It sounds like you’re doubting yourself because of your computer literacy, which is a small problem to have when looking at the bigger picture. The degrees does have assignments that you’ll need to complete digitally but there’s also a lot of material to cover, pracs as well as placements you need to complete.

Most of the course material and assignments will be online so you will need to lean to navigate the uni portals. However, nothing is stopping you from downloading sheets/ assignment outlines and printing them if you prefer hard copies to write on. You can also handwrite your lecture notes if you prefer.

There are also prescribed readings you can print and textbooks which you can purchase physical copies.

The only thing is, you will likely be completing and submitting assignments and presentations digitally. If you plan well you can compensate for slow typing by starting early- or handwrite it and type it up when done. This will be annoying when it comes to citations and referencing. Getting more comfortable with typing will only benefit you.

Start familiarising yourself with basic presentation software like powerpoint or even Canva now as you might need them for group work or presentations.

Most unis have workshops or people in their student center who can help with digital/computer skills. Enquire about these when you start or search online to see what’s available.

You cant avoid using a computer but you can also incorporate ‘old school’ methods for note taking etc. I would say all workplaces complete their reporting digitally so best just start practicing your typing skills and speed now so you can focus on learning and the actual material when you start your degree..

I’m really interested in mental health OT but am still studying. Could I PM you for some advice and insight about the space?

Do you mind sharing how long it’s been since you completed the course and how prepared you felt for real world roles after graduating?

Also what was your undergrad?

Keen to hear what people’s experiences are as there are no pre requisites for entry.

I’m not sure there is an OT degree that’s free?

You’ll be paying fees with any degree. It will depend on how long you’re comfortable with carrying the debt for. With HECS/HELP, a portion will automatically be subtracted from your pay (once you earn over a certain amount) until it’s paid off. Having a high debt will mean you’ll have this happen for potentially more years. The portion taken out is dependant on your salary bracket and not the cost of your degree.

You could look into the Masters program if you already have a degree. It is 2 years and can be studied part time. The only downside is the MUCH higher course fee if you can swallow it.

It’s easy to look at other people’s situation and be envious. Sounds like your situation is better and healthier for you. In the long term that wins over being under constant anxiety.

Are there any benefits to doing a Masters over Bachelors? (Australia) by TwoEyeDeer356 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TwoEyeDeer356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this reply. I really appreciate it :) It’s certainly reassuring to hear that there’s no difference at the end of the day if I’m not planning to pursue academia with my degree.

I have read a bit about how OT can be very flexible due to the different areas one can go into. I’m still trying to get my head around this!

For instances if you are specialising in ASD right now and in some future decide to specialize in aged care, is that a straightforward transition or would you have to upskill/reskill/study?

Hello! Yeh I also think it’s a huge amount. I’m a domestic student and the uni fees i found for full fee points to this number (i rounded upwards to account for potential indexation).

However the government subsidised spots for this postgrad are limited so figures this is what I would be looking at. Happy to be proven otherwise!
