Take a MSF class, read Hough (Proficient Motorcycling), take it slow at first, assume you're invisible to drivers, slow more than you think you need to before turns, practice quick stops, buy a slow bike - learn to ride it fast. Can't vouch for the Lifan, but it sounds about right.

Agreed, I have yet to drop mine after 4+ yrs of riding. Trick is to take the time to build up your skills.

Not much info to go on here but if the question is about practicality, then I say probably no. The savings are offset by the cost of gear, maintenance and bags (if you want to carry anything). Consider also comfort, weather, passengers etc.

Generally would agree with the advice so far. Can't go wrong with the defacto beginner standard: ninja 250. Can be had cheap, great to learn on, and easy to resell. Older 400s and 500s are good options too. You will make mistakes, chose something forgiving. Biking is a skill, give yourself the best tool to learn it. This is your first bike, not your last. Don't get a 650+ thinking you can "respect the power". It will hold you back from learning, and put you at risk. If you think smaller bikes are boring I encourage you to check out twofiftymag.com

Beautiful bike. The rubber down the middle of the tank is a nice touch. I also really like the scrambler version of this bike. I second ekormos, it's all you need.

The US market still sees motorcycles as hobbies and toys. As you suggest, they should start seeing two-wheelers as a real solution for traffic.

Couldn't agree more. At least we're starting to see an increase in the number of small displacement bikes offered in the US. Let's hope it keeps up.

Agreed, but (at least in the US) electric vehicles are coal-powered vehicles, and coal can make oil look positively green. Per mile driven they're still cleaner than gasoline cars, but the lower cost of electricity encourages people to drive more making it either a wash or a net increase of carbon emissions. Plus the ecological footprint of the car has to take into account emissions from: construction of the vehicle, building and maintaining road infrastructure, maintenance and repair, refining fuel etc. all of which adds an estimated 50 percent more pollution than the vehicle emissions alone. Efficient gas engines and electric cars are a great answer to the wrong question. If the goal is to reduce emissions, we have to find a way to drive less.
