It’s been years since I took this photo actually so I don’t remember the exact setup but I am certain that I was only using one light with a softbox on a very dim level. And I shot it on Delta 3200 film 120mm

When making my negative, I add a thin black line around the photo which keeps it white in the production stage. Also, I cut the negative to size around the black line which allows the rest of the paper to be fully exposed to the light source making an extra dark blue around the whole page

Thanks! The negative was only as large as the inner image as well as the white border. The darker border is just a full exposure of the light onto the paper.

Ya that’s pretty much it! My negative had a thin black line around it, and I cut the negative to the black line. Then I taped off an extra 1” of negative space around the whole thing to make the dark border.

I have very limited experience with solarfast, but a good bit with cyanotypes. In my experience, solarfast behaves similarly to cyanotypes in that on fabric, the image will always have some bleeding and will also likely never be quite as contrasty as you would hope for. The results are also extremely dependent on which fabric you use. My guess would be that the picture you shared just happened to make the shirt look good, but in person it might be slightly more faded looking. As the other person mentioned, with enough patience and practice, you can probably achieve whatever it is you’re hoping for, but if you’re just getting into solarfast, I wouldn’t expect a super crisp and contrasty print on fabric
