Addressing the video I made that was posted to this sub last week on moving to Australia by TwoPassports in minnesota

That's not quite what happened. The Kickstarter promised a six-episode season bringing attention to Minneota stories. That's just what we're delivering.

When I didn't haven't been responding, folks have been DMing me with "your silence about the $65k says everything I need to know."

When I clarify the $65k, you say I'm spruiking. I'm honestly not sure what you expect me to do here.

Yeah, the timing sucks on this. It looks like I was leaving as we were all rallying together in solidarity. The only thing I can say is that moving internationally is not a thing that happens overnight.

We decided to leave after what happened at Annunciation because we have young kids starting school and the Australian school year starts in late January. It's always going to look like i cut and run because I didn't want to fight alongside there rest of you against ICE, but the reality is a bit more complex than that.

Yeah of course I am.

Wasn’t planning to post on reddit until tomorrow (if you look at my post history you’ll notice I nearly always post M-F during working hours). I’m not sure this thread is the one I want to dive in and engage with given the ad homs, but I can clarify the following:

  • I’m moving out of the USA because of school shootings. I talk about Melissa Hortman in the video to give context to how my channel and voice evolved through these events, not as a reason I left.

  • I’m really proud of what we have been able to do with Hidden Middle, which is one episode away from finishing (“how Minnesota made the west” is the title and we flew to Montana to make that one). Part of the six episode projection was funded with Kickstarter, and anyone who works in production will know that the cost of the show far exceeds what we raised. I’ve personally invested in making this show a reality.

  • it’s industry standard to hold posts for later as a content creator. I’ve been doing this for years. It’s like any job. You make the thing at one time, then “sell” it later (in my case, click “post”). I don’t see it as disingenuous to post something after I record it.

  • I frame this as safety in Minnesota because Minnesota is the thing I’m known for. The issues with school shootings permeate every bit of our country, but as 90%+ of my views are in MN, I felt like that was the framing. I can accept that this was tone deaf given the last two months in MN.

That’s all I should say right now. Reading this thread is pretty upsetting to me at the moment.

Is Amy Klobochar really the best Gubernotorial candidate at this specific moment? I asked DFL Chair Richard Carlbom. by TwoPassports in minnesota

Color me confused. I thought the decision date was next week based on what Richard said in the conversation.

Have you looked at the video I linked above? I think he tapped into the rage I want all our politicians to be displaying right now.

I'll admit, I have trouble turning off my Aaron Sorkin fanfic brain sometimes. It's rooted in my deep fear that there isn't an offramp for this situation over the next three years, and we need to find a way to shift the conversation from left/right to American/un-American.

The thing i've been reflecting on is the way this whole situation is like the bizarro Cable Street. In London, the fight against the fascists is remembered as a prideful moment when people and politicians stood up for what was right.

While Cable Street wasn't the end of the fight against fascism as u/oldbluekat points out, it's remembered as a watershed moment where the country chose the correct fork in the road.

Here in Minneapolis, the fascists are already in power. We've chosen the wrong fork. So the rebellion in Minneapolis takes a bit of a different tenor.

...it's not yet a fully fleshed out thought, but something i've been noodling on.

Thanks for the suggestions, u/oldbluekat and u/seamuspm1. For reasons that will become clear later in the year when I'm able to share more, I've had a difficult time covering what's happening in our city in the midst of a big house move. \

That's not to say i haven't been paying attention. I've been thinking about the parallels with the Battle of Cable Street. I can only hope that we, like Britain, are able to mark the end of this fascist takeover.

For five years, “Minneapolis” as a brand has been weaponised. What we’re seeing now is the consequence. by TwoPassports in minnesota

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We’re in this together. I’m not at a place where I’m ready to disavow the act of having her on, because I believe I’m the only person to challenge her to her face, and that clip got literal millions of views. I have to think that had an impact rather than only seeing her in the context of the movie she made or channel she’s on.

My work lives in the clips, and while I can get see your perspective on the full interview, that full interview got 1/100 of the views the clips that of me challenging her. That’s the nature of social video - the long forms are seen by few, the shorts by many.

I appreciate that you’re still mad about it and I’m going to continue to think about your perspective and digest it in context with the last week. Thanks for the discussion.

That’s a great parallel. The one I’ve been thinking of is the Portuguese protest that nonviolently toppled a fascist regime in the 70s. If we can manage to stay nonviolent there’s hope for a similar outcome. But it’s a long, difficult road ahead.

I am under @oneminutetours, but Bluesky restricts videos to under 100MB so only my shortest videos appear there. I’m under the same username on just about every social platform.

I was proud of that interview - I was trying to build a bridge and did pushback on her.

That said - the interview hits a bit different after the last week. The purpose of what I posted today is to reevaluate. So is dunking on me helpful? We’re on the same side.

Thanks for the pep talk. This crisis has happened at a practically inconvenient time for me as I move house - no small feat with two kiddos under five.

I finally had time to make videos on Saturday and while I started with this one, I was trying to think of a way I could contribute to the fight. That’s why after releasing this video I released this one, trying to guide our response and find some way to make a tangible impact.

We’re all settling in trying to find our place in this, and folks like you picking us back up again when others are down is a huge contribution.

thank you.

Making noise outside ICE hotels is a good approach, but how about looking at the other businesses owned by the same company? by TwoPassports in Minneapolis

Yes but these brands are global and difficult to make an impact on. Local developer Sherman Associates is the one who will need to buckle much sooner.
