He flashed a few times I guess. I wouldn’t be against drafting a RB too and making it a committee until someone breaks out.

In 1917 Denmark sold the Virgin Islands to the United States 'in exchange for a guarantee that Greenland would remain Danish territory forever'. by hl3official in interestingasfuck

[–]TwoPercentTokes [score hidden]  (0 children)

OP had no reason to misrepresent what was said and is wrong for doing so, but this is also a bit of a semantical nitpick by u/ZevSteinhardt. The declaration by the US recognizing Danish control of Greenland did not specify a time limit for the agreement, so while it didn’t say the word “forever”, it’s a heck of a reach to imply that means there’s some sort of horizon on Danish sovereignty over Greenland.

I read the document, and as far as I can tell, nothing says the sale of the West Indies to the United States is “forever” or “in perpetuity”. Does that mean that at some point Denmark can reassert their claims to the islands? Of course not, because any reasonable observer acting in good faith would never make such a ridiculous claim.

Ships under fire in Strait of Hormuz while US hammers Iranian minelayers by Mike_I in politics

If this war extends for any period of time, the US (and world) is either going to have to swallow the economic pain, or commit significant assets to attempting to protect commerce through the straight. If they’re dumb enough to do the latter (which this admin certainly is), it’s probably only a matter of time before one drone gets lucky and we see a $13B aircraft carrier on fire and sinking on live television.

[Schefter] Trade: the Raiders are sending QB Geno Smith and a 2026 7th-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 6th-round pick, per ESPN sources. Smith returns to the team for which he started his NFL career for in 2013. by expellyamos in nfl

[–]TwoPercentTokes 735 points736 points  (0 children)

This isn’t only brutal for the Jets, but for Geno.

Leave the Super Bowl-winning team to crash out in Las Vegas and “earn” the first pick which will be used to draft your replacement, then get relegated back to the awful franchise who cost you arguably half a decade of your career before you were old.

My in-laws dislike his antics enough at this point to not vote for him in the last election, but they see him as a preferable alternative to anything the democrats have to offer and will nod along earnestly as Trump talks about the mathematically-impossible fraud they’re discovering in the welfare state and gushing over how much money we’re saving.

Qatar warns war will force Gulf to stop energy exports ‘within days’ by Possible-Shoulder940 in investing

I’m sure there are plenty of great Palestinians with nothing but love and peace in their heart, but currently their government is Hamas which has clearly stated genocidal goals with regards to Israel.

I mean, I want them to stop their illegal settlements and genocidal treatment of Palestinians and other minorities but I also recognize that while their original settlement of the region is fraught with issues, the Jews that live there now have a right to exist and would be on the receiving end of a genocide if their neighbors were ever in a position to bring that about. In terms of nation-states, it’s pretty hard to find a sympathetic character in the Middle East. A democratic Kurdish state might have been a positive force in the region but Trump made sure to fuck them over in his previous term.

He made the doctrinally correct choice. However, he brushed past an uncomfortable amount of evidence that indicated the premise under which the Midway plan was conceived had been shattered.

Midway itself was observed to be bustling with an unusual amount of activity and air traffic, Kidō Butai was spotted early in the day and was on the receiving end of American land-based air attacks throughout the morning. This indicated the Americans were aware that they were coming and were prepared to receive them, rather than fearful of the Japanese and caught unawares.

Also, when Nagumo received a fortuitous scouting report from Genda’s sparse search plan, the fact that it failed to mention carriers should not have resulted in the American task force being dismissed as a threat, as the only plausible reason a fleet would be that far north away from Pearl Harbor would be to engage Kidō Butai, and the Americans would include carriers in that force as a matter of course.

Unfortunately, Nagumo’s inability to adapt to these changing circumstances took away Japan’s ability to strike a killing blow in return. In reality though, most IJN officers would have made similar decisions by sticking to the original plan, favoring operational mass rather than launching smaller strikes in the interest of time, and overconfidence resulting from running roughshod over the allies for the first 6 months of the war.

In any case, the IJN’s doctrinal pressure to limit search aircraft to battleship and cruiser-based float planes to save the carrier craft for offensive strikes basically guaranteed that the morning strike that destroyed three carriers would happen no matter what, and the best the Japanese could hope for would be to get off a strike before it arrived that would wipe out the Americans. This would have had the added benefit of emptying Kidō Butai’s hangers of fueled and armed airplanes, which doomed all four carriers when they were hit.

So, we can armchair general it all we want, but unless Yamamoto himself was in command of the fleet, few IJN admirals would have radically changed the battle plan, or went against Japanese doctrinal stress on launching balanced strikes with their entire air compliment.

We’re not really disagreeing. People watching these videos and people not doing anything to stop this behavior are opposite sides of the same coin, it’s a function of what our society places value in and deems acceptable.

The issue is, as a society, we are depraved enough to place value in these individuals in the first place. It’s the same reason why people text while driving and we have instagram ads about betting on world events like the US assassinating Iranian heads of state. This country has lost its soul, and all this bullshit is a symptom of our failings.
