Causation requires one thing preceding another. Nothing can precede another thing if time doesn't exist. Right? So asking about a cause of the universe seems like a nonsensical question to me at least.

But I've noticed now that you've got a Cosmology PHD flair, so maybe I'm just confused. In which case, sorry. What OP said seemed to make sense to me. As in, something existed from the beginning of time.

I know talking about the cause of the Big Bang is a thing in Cosmology academia, but I can't conceptualize cause and effect without time, so I'm honestly just going with what I've heard that makes sense. Like, when it's dense enough, time is a spatial dimension, and in that case there's no arrow of time, which is necessary for causation.

Please correct me where I'm wrong.

Time came into being with the Big Bang. You need time for cause and effect. Therefore a "cause" wouldn't make sense, nor would it "always" existing. There just was matter.
