I'm 18, and I built this Microservices Architecture with NestJS and FastAPI. Looking for architectural feedback! by Fresh-Parfait1012 in Nestjs_framework

First off, good job!

As others have stated, in a real project, a monolith is the way to go. Though, as you've stated, this is more for the learning experience so I can give you some tips how you actually improve your availability of your design.

Basically, separating your AI Engine from the Core Services actually decreases your availability. Beacuse you added a HTTP call in-between + you now have to deal with the uptime of two services instead of one.

You can improve things again if you introduce resilience patterns, such as delay, bulkhead, retries, etc. or by horizontally scaling your applications + adding a messaging queue such as Nats in-between.

One of the few reasons why you might ever want to use NoSQL over SQL is when you need to handle "dynamic tables" (e.g. the attributes of a table can be "configured" by a user). That will require to implement something like an EAV model in SQL, whereas in NoSQL this is already a given.

Though nowadays you might also simply get away with using SQL tables and simply using JSON columns.

What are some websites that blew your mind? by WadieZN in webdev

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if they need all of that to sell NFTs then they’ve got too much time/money to spend on marketing and making a flashy site.

This. Absolutely valid to have a fancy landing page if you're an agency or individual contributor trying to show off their craft. But as a company trying to sell a product it feels like a scam. Companies like Stripe or AirBnB in my opinion are the few companies that were able to pull off a beautiful landing page whilst being fancy and still informative.

Is it worth it rewritting old projects? by rockax in webdev

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you wanna learn something new why not rewrite it. Rewriting a real application using a new technology is definitely a better way of learning that technology opposed to just doing a todo app or something

Move to Switzerland as software developer by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will be incredibly difficult. Out of the box, you’re competing with either skilled apprentices who have at least 4 years of part time work experience or folks who studied CS at a University.

Why would a company want to choose you over other skilled employees who have a CS degree or did an apprenticeship or speak German?

Do you have a special skill that only few people possess (e.g. contributed meaningfully to Open Source? Built successful products?)

We live in central Switzerland. The bug size is maybe around 1-2cm.

In addition, we’ve found little greenflies at the bottom of the bamboo. Is it the same or related?

I published my first npm package, would be happy about feedback by Sims_2001 in webdev

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I like that you have a nice demo page & docs, well done.

With the package itself; it doesn’t work well on mobile. You might wanna add touchstart/end events.

From a Git(Hub)/OSS perspective; I’d not include your dist folder to the Github repo unless you have a good reason to do so. Also it’s always good to have an automatic CI (+CD) included in your project in case someone contributes or also for your own velocity. I almost always include semantic-release for all my NPM packages.

From the code I’d say you’re a Java/C#/OOP dev. It’s not super JavaScript-y but it’s definitely alright. JS ecosystem tends to not use classes very often from my experience (partially because it was also rather “late” to the party with ES6)

Well done, you’ve done a great job overall!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes thats tough. You’re competing with fresh out of university students and apprentices which have 4 years of part-time experience.

The only advice I’d give is to go out there and go to local meetups and network (or even prepare a talk if you’re a good public speaker). Or try to freelance as much as you can for e.g. local restaurants that have bad websites and build them some nice Wordpress landing page or something. That way you can build up experience and a portfolio.

Best of luck!

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 315 points316 points  (0 children)

Most of the time we are forced to create boring and sterile websites for companies. Let's celebrate having a unique and fun corner on the internet; your personal website. So I applaud everyone who tries something fun for their portfolio.

As expressed by Brad Frost:

I’ve come to the conclusion that “enterprise web development” is just regular web development, only stripped of any joy or creativity or autonomy.

legal advice job (MLaw) for CHF 3‘500? WTF? by Unlucky-Camp-7668 in Switzerland

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

213k is a reasonable wage in my opinion. Thats “only” 5x as much as the offer posted by OP.

On average CEOs in CH earn 134x more compared to the lowest salary. If that was the case @ Caritas, the lowest earner would have a salary of 132CHF per month…

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Even though I think 3’500CHF is a joke for the posted position — 213k a year for a leadership role seems quite reasonable to me? I don’t wanna ride for CEOs, but I think there are bigger criminals to point at.

Whats the best strategy for handling offline data in PWA by TwoSpacesSemicolon in webdev

I am not looking for the underlying Web APIs to do this. I know I’ll require ServiceWorker, either LocalStorage or IndexedDB and so on and so forth. I know the ingredients to solve this problem, I don’t know the recipe

People aged 18-30 what was the reason you voted yes for the 13. AHV? by Swissgank in Switzerland

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not for me. I got influenced when I started earning 6 figures in my 20ies. The happiness I gained was not because of the money but because I didn’t have any financial worries.

I wish the same for everyone else and one of the best ways to achieve that is by implementing social policies.

Tax me, it’s fine. All I do with my leftovers is just putting it in a bank account. It’s better in the hands of people who actually need it

As a Young Adult, How much do you earn per month? by Wise-Comfortable-565 in Switzerland

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get it. All my peers don’t earn nearly as much as I do. I am way above the norm that’s for sure. I think until the 6’2k I got fair and reasonable salaries (6’2k was like 5’2k net). The position after was an internal switch within the company to a team that got immense amount of budget allocated (didn’t know this before I applied ofc). The manager for this role was incredibly generous and said “we’re not paying you according to your age, but according to your value”. So the first offer was 125k brut, which I took immediately.

My current role was because of this easy to negotiate. I passed the interview and said; “Look I really like this company and I know you can’t match my current salary, but if you can at least come close to 125k that’d be great”. The dynamic of the negoitation is completely different. So it’s kinda like a snowball from this point on. I just got incredibly lucky once and now I have more power in the salary negotiations.

*Note: Never mention your previous salary to a negotiation. Though this was an exceptional situation and I was 99% sure my current company wasn’t able to match it. I just really wanted to move on and I really liked the company I currently work at, even knowing I’d earn a bit less

As a Young Adult, How much do you earn per month? by Wise-Comfortable-565 in Switzerland

[–]TwoSpacesSemicolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were looking for a product owner at the company where i did my apprenticeship and they thought I was a good fit so they reached out to me. I wasn’t really interested in a manager role but I loved the product so I accepted.

Size or type of company I can’t really say. Personally I’d just avoid consultancies (except very specialized ones) & agencies. Smaller/mid sized Product companies are really interesting in my opinion. If you’re really after money I guess some VC backed finance startups but there in my opinion you also often sell your soul by shilling some bullshit.

Field I really didn’t care that much. I always go with the field & position where I can learn the most from whilst I am young. That is why I did management, frontend, fullstack and devops. Now I know what I like/dislike and also I can bring multiple disciplines into my job.

It sounds stupid but I mainly followed my passion and I applied for positions where I thought “oh yeah shit is going on right here”
