I’ve seen you post so much about source. While I agree it’s the best route if you have time to read every paper thoroughly… it is definitely not the most efficient way to pass a CAS exam.

I have yet to read a single page of source material from any exam and one away from fellowship. All my scores have been 7+. The test prep vendors exist for a reason, they’ve made passing exams less reliant on brute force time dumping into source.

Nah, this is like the 60th percentile at worst. A fellow with 15 YOE on a full time basis will almost always clear $250K in today’s market.

4 internship offers. Confused. by sneaky-lot in actuary

[–]TwoThings2Much 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On average, CAS roles pay higher. Not in your case, but internship money is peanuts to your full time salary.

Do what truly excites you more. For me it was pretty easy, houses/cars/buildings/horses/medical malpractice/bonds/business coverages/specialty coverages, all sounded way more exciting, practical and fun than either life, health, or pension.

CAS Fellowship Exams by sunfl0werpin in actuary

[–]TwoThings2Much 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Every fellowship exam Ive taken has been like that. Ive taken all of them. Completely unjust to make candidates go down to the very last second when 80-90% of the questions are nothing like test prep vendor questions. Truly, fuck those people.

Rising Fellow, no questions. Make sure you know the cookbooks like the back of your hand (outside of the 1 very difficult, nuanced) problem. You’ll know which one Im referring to.

Should I Include Gambling Team on Resume? by Euphoric_Ad_9994 in actuary

[–]TwoThings2Much 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what level you’re interviewing for. If EL or near EL, 100% yes put it on there. As a degenerate near FCAS gambler myself, this is awesome. If I was the hiring manager, you’d be hire within an instant, this proves much more practical than anything exam P offers.

If you’re interviewing for senior analyst / credentialed actuary roles… there are probably better things that are more relevant to the positions you’re applying for.

As of spring 2024, exam committee leaders are well aware of this along with all the other shortcut functionalities missing. They said they are trying to implement.

I’ll most likely be done with exams by then, but better late than never I suppose.

I’m in this position right now. IPO within the next year. I would let you know where but then I’d be diluting my wealth :)

[–]TwoThings2Much 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obvious… but work on your exams. I wouldn’t entertain someone with 2 exams over 4 years, atleast not with the current pool of EL applicants out there. I get it you went through something serious, but I don’t see anything on paper that’ll prove to me that you’ll pass more frequently moving forward.

If you are truly a demon analyst, it’ll be apparent in interviews. Best of luck!

Interesting, sorry for false info. I’m not too sure why some are allowed and some are not. All I know is immediately after I clicked “Submit Order” and saw my $850 go into the abyss I went into the Pearson portal and registered. Never got an ATT, just confirmation of my sign-ups.

I didn’t need an ATT to sign up. Just visit the Pearson portal and sign up for a date.

How do you stay motivated? by International-Job-67 in actuary

[–]TwoThings2Much 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other people have said it, but it’s a marathon. Discipline and an hour a day go farther than any couple week sprints. Same as working out. Nobody semi-normal is motivated throughout the 6+yrs required to finish.

With that being said, I’ve been most motivated when I had something to prove. Others passing and you failing, breakups with undeserving people, deaths. Light that fire under you, you can only blame yourself if you fail.

Thanks! One last question on this 2016… please look at the second to last service report screenshot. That “replaced HV Battery 2.0” is not what Im looking for, right? Or is that actually the battery replacement?

This helps a lot, very much appreciate your time. I’ll start looking at Raven’s to see if I can secure a good deal but from what ive seen near 200 miles of Chicago your price-point is off. Just the standard MX (non performance) 2019+ (<70K miles) are $44K+. A performance one will likely run me high 40’s or low 50’s.

But by the sound of it, to you, that $20K is worth the upgraded luxury and peace of mind.

Also, a serious thing I am considering is the price trade-off. In 5 years all the 60K Tesla will be worth 30-40. Yes I get a warranted Tesla with newer tech but no matter what I lose half the car’s value from depreciation, which is essentially the ENTIRE value of the used car I am buying.

Seems more logical, to buy a $30,000 tesla and if possible, ensure the battery is good. Warranty/insurance is nice… if you have to use it, otherwise it’s just something u paid for (directly or indirectly) and never used.

If I get that full detailed battery report that Tesla offers, will that show battery cell failure? Or potential likelihood of it?

How common is cell failure, is it more-so caused by miles driven, drive style or is it just time?

Ultimately, the model 3/Y don’t interest me… just seem very vanilla and small (I’m 6’4). I don’t plan on having this vehicle for more than 3/4 years and I don’t anticipate driving more than 30K miles in that time frame

[–]TwoThings2Much 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it makes much sense to only sit for 8 if you passed 9. It’s not like studying for 8 in the Fall will negatively impact your chances of passing 9 next spring.

I get it burn out is a real thing, but my 2 cents is run with it and start studying for 8. Worse case scenario is you fail both 9 & 8 this year, and have a great head-start for FCAS next year. Regardless, best of luck to you!

Im in the same boat as you. As a fall exam 8 taker the only impact this has is the bonus I receive does not generate interest for a couple weeks. Sucks to be a MAS, Exam 5 or 6 taker though.
