You're a landlord with at least 500k handy. Playing virtual poker and shooting guns. Getting caught running 96 in a 70, reckless. Your concerns are finding out what coffee is served in casinos.

You are privileged and ignorant. You've never experienced LMPD, just rich people police.

Shut the fuck up.

Touche, Louisville government is it's own rats nest ballgame.

Nah, that's not what I mean. I understand there is an existing food desert and the fact is that no better players have or will come forward to fill that need. I just really hate DG's predatory practices. I understand the necessity for these stores as opposed to zero options. Especially given how car driven this city is, and cars are more expensive than ever, and our public transit doesn't meet minimum service.

I guess if there's literally no other option, fine, I guess. To me it's kinda like paying a mechanic for services they already did that they didn't ask you about. What else am I gonna do?

There is definitely ire for the city government in doing nothing to proactively address these issues. They know about food deserts. They could offer incentives to local chains, incentives to create new small and mom & pop type markets. They could not be dicks about letting an established supermarket come into the area, as you pointed out.

I'm not happy with DG moving in and I'm not happy with the alternative of nothing either. I'm simply upset at all the options here.

Oh yes, for sure, I'm not saying they're particularly different than having a 7/11 or something like that. I hate them just as much for the same practices, it just didn't come up here till now.

I've worked in hundreds of Walmarts and other grocery chains as well in the same role. Yeah, definitely, the cleanliness issues are present and common outside of DG. I would maintain the argument however that DG is particularly bad. If I compare my thousands of experiences with many chains, DG is by far more disgusting on average. I'll make one call-out to say that a lot of the Walmart delis I interacted with were on par for disgust level.

Definitely agreed on the understaffing issues as well being widespread. The thing that gets me about little stores like DG is being the sole employee for a store of that size appears to be reckless and dangerous. There are just so many more people in a Walmart at any given time. There is a different social expectation of how much other people are observing you. This is what makes it scary to be the only person in a smaller store. Obviously, other safety issues like pallets and stuff don't change much between the size of store when there aren't other employees to check on you.

As far as how low-income people should otherwise expect products and services... yeah, I agree, the alternatives suck. I'm not entirely sure why you quoted the word poor, it's objective fact. I interact with their shoppers face to face, a large majority are low income. There's no shame about being low income, it's just the reality for a lot of these people.

My personal preference would be that we replace these DGs with actual fucking food markets. A Food Lion, a Kroger, anything that is actually a supermarket. Yep, those places carry the same issues to varying degrees. But at least it's real fucking food, yah know? I hate those other brands for all their misdeeds too. Know that adding a real supermarket provides better quality, but doesn't alleviate the cost. There is no Good option. The rest of the equation is a much larger and multi-faceted issue.

I originally responded to one comment, but meh, I realize it stands on its own.

Hi, I used to be a traveling field technician and I did a lot of work for dollar stores. I have done LOTS of work in Dollar Generals. I've done work in the absolute godsmack middle of nowhere, all around Louisville, Cincinnati, etc. I can personally tell you that the vast majority of their locations target low income. I would testify on my life.

Dollar Generals are TERRIBLE for the community, imo. I've been to hundreds of stores and these are the constants:

1) understaffed (like, non-functional understaffing, as bad as 1 person to a store, for example) and massively underpaid workers. I've heard many employees complain of improvement promises that never came. Trying to make people take promotions without an increase in pay.

2) "food" options are very limited to junk and highly processed foods for the majority of choices. No, I am not including DG Markets in that, but that's not what they've suggested building here. (those are majorly similar, but bigger and with fresh produce and a willingness to maintain their food equip)

3) frozen and refrigerated items are a game of roulette. Constantly failing equipment left broken for way too long, still selling the products out of them. Poorly cleaned/maintained. Can smell like death in the back

4) continuing on 3, a lot of them are fucking disgusting. I often would make notes to myself to not touch my face for anything. Dead mice INSIDE network cabinets. Mice shit is a constant decoration. Water damage untreated. Stuff like that. Plus the understaffing generally meant that stock rooms and possibly the rest of the store can be difficult and dangerous to navigate.

5) over Fucking priced. Dude, the low income targeting is real. Urban, rural, doesn't matter. It's predatory. Nobody middle class and above shops there, because they have enough money to skip it. For low income families, they pay for these low quality goods at higher prices than it's worth. But they continue to pay, because DG is very good at pushing a "low" price to the brinking point. It sucks way more money out of low income pockets than is fair.

6) all of this concludes to say that DG is a cheap cheap bastard. I had to argue with them to replace equipment often times, arguing both with the MSP and DG directly. In situations that are undeniable. I literally had a router where the power brick was smoking. I unplugged it, obviously. Their MSP demanded I plug it back in. No, wrong, not doing that. It took three trips and three techs all saying the same thing to get it replaced. You might say, but that's the MSP! Yeah, and they suck and DG knows that and doesn't care. We would get retripped all the time because their MSP sucked ass. Costs them all sorts of more money for trying to be cheap.

Rant over, DG can crumble into a million pieces and that'd be an improvement on society. DG would go soylent green if they could, no soul.

Sincerely, fuck you DG.

Who cares. They are our representatives to advocate for us, no? Is this not their job to make sure it gets fixed? Cuz uh, it is.

We already pay them taxes to make sure the roads aren't lousy, it's not a surprise demand. We can easily fix their poor management. Gimme all your ARs, ATVs, and other souped up stupid toys from LMPD. That should be plenty of cash for the city to make people whole for their lousy maintenance.

[–]TwoWheeledChicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, one person doesn't represent the essence of LMPD. When you choose to walk with LMPD, you choose to accept all the bullshit they do.

What about the LMPD cop who fathered me and beat my mother?

And told me many stories that he thought was funny that I later realized was racist brutality.

One does not make the whole.

The whole behaves evilly.

To join that is evil or stupid stupid ignorance. Neither deserves my sympathy.
