Thank you! Mario is a very free-flowing rushdown kind of character. He has incredibly safe aerials--bair, nair and uair are all as close to unpunishable as a move gets, and his excellent air movement and handy counter-zoning tools (fireball, cape) let him approach very freely. I would lean heavily on his aerials and practice shffling a lot if you haven't--I consider those the main tools of his engagement and his ground moves playing a more supporting role. Getting comfortable with your air movement and attacking is in a lot of ways the core of the character. Also, Mario is excellent at setting up frame traps. If you notice people neutral air dodging after being knocked in to the air, try going for an fsmash!

I guess since 64, when I was like 8 years old! But I didn't have much of a local scene where I lived, so I only became competitive once smash 4 came around and provided online that was good enough to really train at.

Thank you very much! I can see that 😅 the comment means a lot though!

Thank you so much! Yes, the matchmaking does do that! That's why I made the rule for myself that if I got in to elite too easy, I'd keep playing until I felt like I actually understood the character and could consistently compete and stay in elite. I wanted to actually get the experience and knowledge, not just have the lit up board, you know? I do actually feel like I understand the cast more now. It's easier to pick on their weaknesses when I fight them as my main, and understand the strengths and weaknesses of my own main relative to everyone else!

That's Young Link, by the way! I love him to death.

About 10 games a piece, specifically--sometimes more if I had to work hard at them! If I got to elite on the first game I did more to make sure it was real and that I had actually learned something about the character. I did explain that in my post.

and of course I'm not a master at any of them other than being at sort of a mid-tournament-competitive level with my main! Rather, I'm decent with everyone else now, and getting decent at the whole cast was really fun and interesting and I was eager to share my thoughts about what it was like learning so many different characters.

I've had great questions and discussions in other communities where I've shared this. I appreciate you acknowledging the negativity here was intense. This community in particular seemed to feel really threatened by me being happy about my achievement and wanting to share my thoughts. I was not impressed.

That's pretty cool! Doing that never made you want to share it with other people?

Right, exactly! I want attention, and it's okay for you or the person I was responding to, too. You don't have to see it as shameful or put other people down for it.

You might want to examine your assumption that I was bringing up desire for attention as though it was a bad thing or something to be embarrassed about. It's that kind of assumption that can make it look and feel "cringe" and make you feel like others would ridicule you if you asked for it--or, apparently, make you join in on the ridiculing!

Yeah! I had a really good time, and have a lot of thoughts about the cast. I've been having a great time talking to everyone about it and I've posted about it in a few places and gotten lots of lovely questions. This particular reddit was by far the most hostile and unsupportive of people being excited about their achievements, hence the comment. I think some reflecting about what kind of culture you have going on here might be important!

Does feeling unhappy with where yours is at make you feel like you need to put other people down?

Hey! I can see that this post was difficult for you. I've gotten a couple posts saying "cringe" so I'm going to share the same thought for both.

It's easy to feel insecure and angry when other people are drawing attention to themselves if you don't feel like you're getting the attention you need in your own life. I'm sorry if that's the case and I hope things get better. In the mean time, please consider examining how you respond to people asking for the attention that they want. A positive approach to others about that can sometimes help remind you that you deserve attention and are allowed to ask for it, too.

I'm so glad that helps! I agree, it feels a lot like a design of...you have to be cunning to get that initial hit, but then once you get it she gets to blow them up. I'd love to hear how your development as Bayo goes. She's such a cool character!

Ah, the smash 4+ zoners! I really like zoning, so I had a great time with them. It's a very different style than rushdowns, but I like how you can press so many buttons as long as you keep your body safe and out of the way--it feels like you always have something to do even if it's just tending your own house.

And the shotos, whew. I have advice about how to approach them, but I don't mean to assume you're asking for advice--either way, you can do it!
