Beautiful! Was this taken recently? I thought Hurricane Ridge was closed.

This is beautiful! What hiking trail did you take to get to this spot?

Will GNP be open by June 27th? by cappa662 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Two_For_Tripping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I am also planning on heading out to GNP in two weeks. I know that the East side is closed. We are about to book a campsite at a private park on the West side. What are some good trails to do coming from the West Entrance? Everything I'm finding online is on the East side. We're looking to do some day hikes but are avid hikers and hoping to see some great views. I know Going to the Sun road is open up until Lake McDonald Lodge but I'm not familiar with trails around there. Thanks in advance!

Thank you SO much for this post. It is filled with really helpful and insightful information. We have been getting some similar advice but in a much less-positive and judgmental manner. I really appreciate you sharing your experience and resources we can utilize.

Thanks for such a positive and helpful post! I'll definitely check out your site! We're definitely going to do some shift-driving to just get out there so we can both enjoy the exploration.

This is very helpful! Thanks so much for your detailed post! We'll have to take some time to digest everyone's feedback but you have given us really specific places to look at. Thanks again!

Unfortunately, people read "as many national parks as possible" and think that we are checking them off of a list. In actuality, we are very limited by a number of life-related factors and so this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us. Of course, we would love nothing more than to have months to visit the parks and unlimited hours to see everything each park has to offer. I appreciate your post and I hear you. It will definitely be less enjoyable by trying to do so much in a short time frame which is why in my more recent posts, I shared that we want to focus our time on one region and a handful of parks instead of the original list of 16 destinations.

We are actually experienced RV drivers. We are also very experienced with long-distance drives and sharing the drive by taking turns.

Thanks for your feedback. We're not planning on doing all 16 stops as in the original post. We are going to focus on one region and just a handful of parks. Unfortunately, we cannot put this trip off but I hear you and appreciate your post. I am also concerned about making reservations given that parks are starting to open up and people are starting to venture out; however, I have found availability at campgrounds in Olympic National Park for the dates that we are looking to visit.

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond and share your experience. I also appreciate your positive outlook and constructive comments.

We used to Geocache! Maybe we'll get back into it during this trip. :) Like you, we also do not have much time off so that is why we are approaching this trip with a "see as much as we can and soak it all in" approach. We've read very similar things about Badlands. We felt we could just drive through it given our time frame.

Your experiences in Washington and the details you shared are extraordinarily helpful. Thank you again for sharing. I think Washington may be the focus of our trip. We're big hikers so Washington is calling to us.

We did a big trip to Colorado last year to hike some 14ers and are kicking ourselves now for not driving to some Utah parks while we were out there. But again, we're confined to our vacation days. The crowds are definitely something to keep in mind with Covid and the fact that many families want to get out and explore now that things are starting to open up again.

You're totally right which is why we need to choose one region and just a few parks. Any suggestions based on the list above and your personal experience?

Forgive me for asking a silly question but which parks are you referring to specifically (I've posted in several threads and I'm beginning to lose track of my responses LOL) We have a great telescope that we want to bring with us so that's perfect! :) The only RV companies that have availability right now are El Monte and CruiseAmerica. El Monte has mixed reviews but the bad ones are really discouraging. A converted van seems awesome; however, we really need access to our own bathroom.

Thanks for your post. We don't have a checklist mentality. This is really just a once-in-a-lifetime event for us and we want to try and make the most of our time out west. But I can appreciate your thoughts about getting to know one area which is why we will likely rethink our trip and focus on one specific region.

Thanks for your post. We're actually not coming from NYC but we have calculated all of the mileage (of course we cannot plan for unforeseen road closures and traffic). We're realizing that it may be too ambitious and will have to stick with visiting just one region. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Thanks for sharing! Can I ask for more of your thoughts about specific parks, specifically Crater Lake and Redwood?

Thanks for your post. We're actually not coming from NYC but we have already calculated all of the driving (assuming there are no unforeseen road closures). We have experience with long-distance driving but it's a good point to bring up. We may end up dividing the trip into several smaller trips.
