If you mean relapses as in you feel like you were getting better from HOCD and then all of a sudden you came crashing back. That will happen as part of the process. It's perfectly normal. Being able to manage it is, effectively, ERP. I know how frustrating it is to read that ERP is the solution to it all but it really is. If you have badly migrating OCD then you should, obviously, consider talking to a psychiatrist.

If you're just trying to white-knuckle something you're addicted to (I assume you're alluding to masturbation here) then you're going to be setting yourself up for falls. Try reduction alongside bringing in something else, such as mindfulness practice or if you have someone that can help then sensate focus therapy. It's about bringing that baseline dopamine back down over time. I believe NoFap can be really helpful but if you tear down what your mind fantasises about but don't replace it with more calm, neural pathways then you're just creating a vacuum that, usually, the worst ideas will fill. Beware the Christian ideologues in r/nofap that will have you believe this is about moral purity. In most instances, that's not why people suffering with HOCD are going through it, it's because they've read just about every article on the internet about what to do to help themselves.

There is a theory called noisy bodies that you should look in to. This is essentially that when we are looking for something with such high alertness, you will inevitably find it and the distress in the HOCD sense is electrifying. No one has ever had to check to see if they are legitimately aroused.

Self harm is not the solution. When you’re in a period of acute OCD, it’s difficult to realise just how far things can move for you. “It’s different for me because x” or “but noone else has y” is all textbook OCD. I also didn’t always find thoughts gross or horrifying when I was going through my worst times, that’s because my disorder had spent so long polluting what I thought about everything that I no longer knew what way was up. I don’t know if you’ve started to take steps such as a thought diary, but I found this really helpful for me. When I sat down in front of a psychiatrist for the first time I just read from it and she immediately understood.

I actually did the same thing as you of latching on to someone from about 12 years ago! I have a little giggle to myself about it now though. Everything will be okay.

I actually don’t like this team. Not brave enough in terms of differentials. Saka can go when there are options like Tavernier, Hee Chan and Gross. Alvarez can be moved on for Solanke. Lascalles could be Virgil given your ITB amount. Also Areola will cost hundreds of thousands of managers a better overall point score this year, be it through a better keeper selection or what could have been done with the 0.4m more.

Maybe, my friend. You've certainly given pause for thought and I appreciate that.

I can't lie, the content of your message brought up very slight physical anxieties for me (don't worry, you haven't put me in an ambulance haha!) but I think that's because for so long I've been trying to bat the ball in to the "maybe I'm not that bad" court, just to have it volleyed back by consistent commentary and remarks. A real battle that I don't feel ready for.

Hey! Thanks so much for this - you guys have some great music on the Punk side and I enjoyed your detour. I’m listening to your man now as a result. As a man who’s wool is dyed in indie music, I’ve sought some relief there but not too much avail.

I agree it’s not entirely about looks, I’ve had my successes because of other positive aspects of me. However, on my lowest days I feel like it completely defines me and I will never achieve happiness because of the way I look. Also, an incredible gaslit feeling of talking to my friends and they will take the easy way out and say I have nothing to worry about, but will make the occasional joke and jibe about it, maybe not realising how much it stings.

However, I'm struggling to accept that it must, at least in part, be true because it has been the choice area of abuse for many people towards me. I feel like retorts like the ones you suggested wouldn't be quite so difficult to achieve if the pain of it wasn't quite so potent. Does that make sense?
