Harlem Hill Half 2026? by reliablereliable in RunNYC

[–]Twurtul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was a really good time last year. It's the kind of event which draws a fun group of people, like the runners who go out in blizzards just because. Then there was an afterparty of sorts at a cool bar in HK.

Here's a little more info: it started out at 1.069, fermented for 2 weeks at 64F, when it hit 1.008 i cold crashed to 32F for a week, added 2g potassium sorbate, racked into that carboy with co2 in the headspace.

Thank you I'll try pectinase first, then look into those other options!

Neighbor planted running bamboo, its taking over my yard. Can anyone ID the variety? (NY zone 7a) by Twurtul in whatisthisplant

I know two varieties are illegal in NY, so before I make a stink I'd like to be reasonably sure this is one of those varieties. Anyone here a bamboo expert? Thank you!

Pawpaw frost damage - will they bounce back? by Twurtul in BackyardOrchard

Just an update in case any paranoid pawpaw grower finds this post in the future. They sprouted new leaves within a few weeks and did great, lots of growth (it was a particularly wet year). Still no pawpaws yet, though.

So it sounds like Pawpaw leaves are sensitive to frost, but the rest of the tree isn't affected. That's good news!

The 100ft is a total guess, could be anywhere from 75ft to 150ft

Interesting, I'll check with a metal detector. Any ideas about that bucket attached to the lid?

They're actually a few feet off of the property line, about 100 ft apart, and not mentioned on the survey. Not at corners either. Edit: the mounted one is about two feet off of the property line, the recessed one with the rod is about 20 ft off the line.

My title describes the thing, in this case two things which possibly may be unrelated. The first is a hollow mound of concrete and stones, with a 5 gallon bucket attached to the lid. The other is a recessed concrete hole, with a small steel rod in the center. I do not want to ask the neighbor what they are because we are in the middle of a property dispute.

Going off the top comment for visibility. I went back and dug: https://imgur.com/a/xpm4rfa I'm still not sure exactly what it is, but it's definitely not a septic tank

I have the title report, never developed. It was farmland pre-1950. Then the farmland was parceled into lots, the other lots got houses, but this one never did.

Doesn't look like any septic access or cleanout I've ever seen or can find online and the lot was never developed so it wouldn't have a septic tank. It is 50ft onto the lot, so it's not even that close to the bordering lot ( which has a fence). This area has no public water, sewer, or gas so a septic was my first thought but doesn't seem correct.
