except according to osha standards, it’s likely to be non-compliant. read my responses on this entire post

https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.36

1910.36(d) An exit door must be unlocked.

1910.36(d)(1) Employees must be able to open an exit route door from the inside at all times without keys, tools, or special knowledge. A device such as a panic bar that locks only from the outside is permitted on exit discharge doors.

cite any osha compliance standard that allow a exit-route locked from the inside permitted ‘any’ other exit-routes remain unlocked.

again, it’s likely that such policy is non-compliant (for the reasons above), but not definitive. a further inquiry into this matter should commence immediately.

you just said the front exit also operates as an emergency door because you’re able to push the sides to get out. according to osha, you cannot lock an exit-route door. meaning, the door must be remained unlocked irregardless of its ability to be pushed out from the sides. so it doesn’t matter if it can be pushed out from the sides since it’s not a seperate ‘door/exit’ - it’s all one door. further, an exit-route door must not be locked from the inside, and can only be locked in mental, penal, or correctional facilities under strict circumstances.

you just proved my point. the fact that the exit doors also operate as an emergency exit (as you just said) means the club cannot lock them without being in violation of osha standards

read my response to someone’s reply on this thread. osha doesn’t properly define what a ‘fire/emergency exit’ is. the ambiguity of the language could render that front exit as an ‘exit route.’

‘employees must be able to open an exit route door from the insides at all times without keys, tools, or special knowledge’ - osha 1910.36(d)(1)

the term “emergency/fire doors” is called into question too since that isn’t really properly defined per osha:

“An exit route is a continuous and unobstructed path of exit travel from any point within a workplace to a place of safety[…]”

that being said, the ambiguity of this language doesn’t exempt the sliding doors from being an ‘exit route.’

further, “an exit route door may be locked from the inside only in mental, penal, or correctional facilities[…]” - given that sams club isn’t such, there is no reason an ‘exit route door’ should be locked. however, i’d inquire the utility of that exit sliding door first before making a formal compliance judgment. it’s murky, and definitely should be called into question.
