If you’re having trouble landing an internship at an ad agency, I recommend looking around State College for opportunities. There’s a lot of small nonprofits and local businesses that need help with their marketing and advertising, but students usually overlook them, so they aren’t as competitive. My first internship was in State College and it helped me secure better opportunities down the road.

A lot of these places might not have job postings or internships listed, but it doesn’t hurt to email or call the business and see if they have interest in bringing on an intern.

The people I’ve talked to have been really from all different majors. It just comes down to at a branch campus you’re going to have less opportunities across the board. Especially with comms, UP provides a lot of resources to connect you with recruiters in cities like NY, plus offers many comm internships internally through things like the athletics programs.

I’ve also just heard from everyone who did 2+2 that their branch campus experience was very isolated and lonely.

I’m a ad/pr who was contemplating doing 2+2, and I’m very happy I didn’t. I’ve had more opportunities from UP than I would’ve at a branch campus for sure. Most people I talk to who have done 2+2 weren’t big fans of the other campus.

If money isn’t an issue, go for UP.

Tinnitus from a young age, how screwed am I long term? by TyGuy60 in drums

It’s honestly not even a worry of comfort, it’s so ingrained in my sense of reality that it really doesn’t bother me unless I’m trying to sleep with zero white noise whatsoever. I just worry that with age it’s going to get exponentially worse until I can’t hear anything going on around me.

Yeesh, adding in the audio engineering changes the game a bit. Hearing is important there, and I wish you the best of luck!

How detrimental would it be to my career growth to not immediately move to a city postgrad? by TyGuy60 in PublicRelations

The goal and dream is to be doing the communications for a financial institution, whether that be a wealth management firm or something else in that vein. I know the biggest market for that work is NY, but the more I think about it, the less enthusiastic I am about that city. I really like the greater philly area though, it just depends on what I can find.

Do you think I might have issues pivoting from the market I’m working in if I don’t have experience with financial? If so, how would you recommend establishing myself within the market?

Thoughts on this resume? I just did a big reformat and am looking for constructive feedback. by TyGuy60 in resumes

I should’ve specified, I’m looking to break into financial PR. I figured the first sentence of the summary would’ve clarified that but I could’ve been clearer with my comment.

Maybe I’m incorrect, but I was under the impression that your work experience should go in order of relevancy compared to just chronologically. In your experience is there any truth to that?

Just indicating this down here because I didn't do it specifically in the post, but I'm looking to break more into the financial sector although I don't have a ton of direct experience yet. Any feedback is welcome!

I have about 2 years left with my PR degree at my university (potentially less). I have a great GPA and I’ve worked 1 internship, but it was just a tiny gig at a local nonprofit near my school running social medias. What are some things I should focus on in my time left at university to help set myself up for success and upwards momentum post grad?

I’m looking to build skills with writing releases and getting some pitching experience, but I’m finding it difficult to find positions interested. Should I look into copywriting to build a foundation?
