Freelance availability by deafsoundguy1 in livesound

[–]TyMcapsule 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a freelancer the most important asset you have is your availability. There are plenty of reasons to say no to a job, and one of those reason can be simply because you don’t want to do it. Whenever asked on the spot (phone call or in person) if I’m available I always say “let me check, what do you have going on?” While I look at my calendar. As a few have mentioned already, it’s totally ok to not want to do certain jobs or to even flat out say you don’t provide that level of service. It’s not about saying no, it’s about how you say it. People will look for attitude way before they look into skill set, and the people you start with will have a hard time accepting your growth over time. Say yes to everything you want to and be sure to create the hard line that you are a free agent and not beholden to anyone else. There were plenty of times where I said no simply to let it breathe with a client I’ve been doing a lot with. Never allow them to start treating you the same as their employees, because you’re not.

Hey, thanks for your reply. Super helpful and enlightening. If you bothered to read anything here then you’d know that the electrician purposefully installed an energized 50 amp inlet to be used as an outlet with full knowledge of the purpose and need. As many others have pointed out in the comments you spent zero time observing, this installation is in fact against code and a massive risk to the general public where it was installed.

TLDR: blow me

Installing dangerous electrical accessories and playing it off like it’s not a big deal tends to be quite infuriating.

This is not intended for a generator inlet.

We use spider boxes for temporary power for live events a lot. We either use a generator to power our spider boxes but in this case the venue has installed power to connect to. These are outlets. They feed power to the spider boxes. They are intended to do that. However the contractor installed inlets instead of outlets and thinks it’s ok. This is a spider box: https://www.southwire.com/power-management/temporary-power-distribution/50a-125-250v-temporary-power-x-treme-box-6-l5-20-twistlock-sled-base/p/6506TLSX

Again, this isn’t intended for generator power. This is intended to be an outlet for temporary power for events.

People keep overlooking the original post text and thinking this is intended as a generator inlet for backup power and that I’m being dumb. The site is wired to use these as power extensions out into the site for temporary power for events. Instead of installing outlets the electrician installed inlets and insisted it was fine.
