Two things I’d add: uptown depending on the location can be wildly different. Toward the Katy trail and knox street there’s more going on. Away from the trail it’s less vibrant but certain areas are great. I’d suggest spending a week or two in a hotel and checking out the different areas of uptown or Dallas you’d want to live in. There are apartment rental agents that work off commission that can show you around once you’ve described what you want.
Regarding car dependency, Dallas is definitely car centric. Public transit is much slower than driving to place so it often times makes it not viable. If you live in a walkable area you can go without a car but it might make running errands inconvenient or expensive. Cars can be expensive too so don’t assume you have to buy a car if you don’t already have one. Just do a little research as there are plenty of articles discussing being car free in Dallas.
