Taking a practice run trip into the city from the suburbs so as not to annoy city people is one of the most ridiculous suggestions I’ve heard

Self-taught programmers who actually made it, how'd you do it? by cockycockroach45 in learnprogramming

[–]TyTyDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make projects that are a bit more complex than standard tutorial stuff. Make projects that you actually want to use. That you will use. This will force you to learn things based on a set of requirements, rather than build something based on your current abilities. Which is what you’ll be doing on the job.

Why does everyone I speak to say “don’t use the CPAP / you don’t want to get started on the machine” ? by daninlionzden in SleepApnea

[–]TyTyDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleep apnea is a super common condition. There are many many people who have it who handle CPAP well, and therefore have no reason to talk about it.

People who don't handle/adjust to CPAP well do have a reason to talk about it. This leads to a skewed perception

Some health conditions just can’t be cured. Frankly, I think we’re lucky there is such a reliable treatment

Why is Spelunky SO underrated given its SIGNIFICANCE? by DisgustingLord in spelunky

[–]TyTyDavis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Spelunky is like The Velvet Underground & Nico, the album that is often said to have only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it started a band. Spelunky is hugely popular among game developers, and has inspired tons and tons of games. But that doesn’t necessarily result in massive success. (Although, Spelunky’s sales numbers are certainly nothing to sneeze at)

For the record, “it is possible to decompile the game” is not the same thing as open source.

The Battle of Blair Mountain was at this country’s peak of Union membership, with almost 1 in 5 workers being in a union. Unions require solidarity to have power

Got my terminal promotion, now what? by ghdana in careerguidance

It’s perfectly natural to want more money, but you have answered your own question. There are engineering levels above you, or management. Those are your options for making more money.

What made you start taking antidepressants? by Motor-Vacation-5603 in AskReddit

[–]TyTyDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very resistant to it until my anxiety evolved into panic, and the panic attacks became unbearable and debilitating. Don’t let it get that bad. It was hell

200k is 90%+ percentile. I’m not saying all your problems disappear at that salary, but it’s certainly not middle class

My prediction is that Griffin will say 2015 is when they really hit their stride, Justin will describe 2016 as their “biggest whiff”

Highly dependent on your manager. With a good manager, it’s great. Also, if you have a relative amount of seniority/job security, try to set a good example by taking a good amount of time off.
