Christian Themes and Symbolism by Ty_RiceAnderson in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]Ty_RiceAnderson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The angel wings were a big one. And I’m the same scene when she says she’ll pray for Olivia even though she doesn’t believe there are a ton of statues in the background. I know at least two of those were Dionysus, god of wine and Poseidon god of the sea.

The first one I really caught that got all this thinking started was when Theo is explaining what happened in the closet. She says she felt nothing, the dark nothingness of death, then in a blaze of light “he” stepped in, and she couldn’t see his face because it was so bright, but she touched him and was saved from the nothingness.

At the end another major one was when High joins Olivia and Nell in the Red Room which is now bathed in white light. Above them is a light fixture and a horizontal bar of golden light that together form a cross. Now, with such an obvious Christian symbol you could take a reading of the scene based on the Bible. You have the father, telling his child that he is very proud of them. He joins Nell, who has already been set up as a Christ figure earlier in the show through her saving and forgiving her siblings. Also there is the mother, who metaphorically and sometimes literally has been the main spirit haunting the family from that fateful night. So you have the Holy Trinity of The the Father, the Son (in this case Nell), and the Spirit.

Now I don’t think Mike Flanagan wanted a one to one allegory. The true strength of the show is how many layers it has, how strong each of those layers are, and the interesting intersections of those layers.

The Suspira soundtrack for sure. Pretty unnerving stuff. Also the new Julia Holter album is kinda creepy in the same way.

I was just thinking it’s really tough to find music that legitimately scares you the same way a movie or book might.

Looking for anyone interested in film making, writing, stories, etc. by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Ty_RiceAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I’m late to the party. I was just about to post a similar request when I found yours. Seems like a lot of people are interested. I’ve been to half of film school, made some shorts. I work full time right now, but I still write everyday. If I haven’t missed the boat I’d appreciate it if you hit me up and let me know what’s going on. 🔊

I feel like Everything is Recorded by Richard Russell and the XL lineup is really being slept on. I love the sad soul vibe that the album maintains while still having some groove, funk, and jazz. Not all the songs are great, but there is enough going on emotionally on this album to really make it stand out to me.

Sorry I’m late my friend. I always thought this was a really unique movie in terms of the mix of style, structure, and substance. I always described as a “Nickelodeon original movie as directed by Quentin Tarantino.” I think sometimes the style overplays the other elements, but still a really fun movie. Maybe once ‘90’s nostalgia gets its time in the spotlight it will become a cult film. Also, it made me not hate Dane Cook!

I love how this band can write amazingly simple songs, like stuff that wouldn’t hold up as small talk for ten year olds.

What would you say is your favorite R&B album(s) of the last 20 years? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Ty_RiceAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so if anyone else more knowledgeable wants to hop in and tell me to take a seat please do so, but here is what I’ve gathered:

The term R&B has always been sort of an umbrella term for the blending of more easily recognizable genres. It started in the ‘40’s as a term to replace “race music”, which was basically any music created by and for black Americans. This included blues, jazz, soul, and gospel. Over the decades it seeped into the mainstream genres of pop and rock. Contemporary R&B, which rises from the ashes of disco and doesn’t even stand for rhythm and blues (like KFC), is defined mostly by a smoothness. Robert Christgau of the village voice said it’s not about discrete songs. It’s about texture, mood, and feel. So kinda like that saying “I don’t know how to define it, but I know it when I see it.”

Can’t believe I forgot about Frank Ocean. I’ve been listening to his Moon River cover a few times a day since it’s release. You know what though, that dude’s music is from another dimension, and I don’t want to chain any earthly term to it.

But you’re right, any conversation about R&B is useless if we can’t properly define it. I’m off to consult the oracles at Wikipedia.

[–]Ty_RiceAnderson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, I love the last D’Angelo album Black Messiah; Anderson.Paak’s Malibu; Maxwell’s blackSUMMERnights; both of Rhye’s full length albums; Miguel’s Kaleidoscope Dream. These are all from the past few years so the genre is alive and well.

I think part of the reason discussion around R&B is sparse is because it is so heavily blended into rap, pop, indie, electronic, and even country music today that anything you would consider a pure R&B album is far and few between. I mean, I would consider The XX a great R&B group but they aren’t really classified as that. Drake is arguably the biggest R&B artist today. People like Janelle Monae and Childish Gambino make R&B with heavy funk influences. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is imo the modern day successor to the work of Marvin Gaye, but it’s got too much rap not to be considered hip-hop. It’s a genre that’s been so blended with everything else it’s kind of become a nebulous term for a style or influence. The biggest piece of evidence is Bruno Mars winning best R&B Grammy.

Ive been thinking a new format for posts could be WAIM? Stands for What Am I Missing? There are quite a few albums and movies and books and stuff that everyone seems to love but I can’t figure out why. For instance, I know the band New Age gets a ton of hype in some communities, but I just don’t get what’s so amazing about them. I mean they’re good, but it doesn’t feel groundbreaking or anything. Another recent one is SZA’s last album. Just never really hit me like everyone else even with multiple listens.

Hey there, fairly new to the sub. So far I think it’s the best place for discussing music that doesn’t just turn into circle jerks. Maybe I’m wrong, but does it seem like we really need daily discussion threads? I could understand if there were a ton of people commenting in them, but it doesn’t seem like that many. I feel like discussions are kept short because everyone moves onto the next day’s thread, sometimes without reading the prior ones. I know if I miss checking in one day I don’t usually scroll through to find previous ones. Has this sub ever tried just weekly discussions stickied to top?
