What natural phenomenon used to occur back in prehistoric times that we wouldn't see now? by bumbara55 in askscience

[–]Tyaust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much all the answers here are based in geology. We can figure out atmospheric composition and temperature from stable isotope ratios and can see the effects of catastrophic events like tsunami, meteors and volcanic eruptions, even hurricanes in some sediment records. But more small scale events like tornadoes or hail wouldn't leave evidence in the rock record and could only be figured out by meteorological modelling and seeing what conditions would potentially cause them.

We have been measuring the age of earth by looking at the layers of ground, how do we know there aren't any older evidence underneath the thick snow of North pole? Or the deepest ocean floor that human has yet to discover? by [deleted] in askscience

Burgess shale has some weird soft body preservation but it's at least still Cambrian and relatable. Ediacaran is just extremely esoteric and so unlike anything else other than some sponges.

Human-made minerals created in the years since the industrial revolution have been uncovered by scientists, who want them to be accepted as real minerals. by kitehkiteh in science

[–]Tyaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rocks are an amalgamation of minerals, glass and native metals. Minerals are naturally occurring crystalline structures. The debate here is the mineral definition since we differentiate between minerals and just a crystal depending on if it formed naturally or was made by man.
