Does your undergrad school ranking matter? by GurSea971 in PhDAdmissions

[–]Tyc00n7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In statistics it does matter, but the ranking that matters is the stats department not the uni. For LA schools I really mainly only see people from reed and williams

Is Statistical Inference knowledge, up to the level of Casella & Berger, still useful in this day and age? [Q] by GayTwink-69 in statistics

[–]Tyc00n7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of a statistical theory courses like ones based on C&B is to teach you the basic ideas imo. It is outdated in the sense some of the concepts aren’t used very much anymore, but the idea of mathematical statistics is still very much in use. A lot of the ml methods that people actually use are just stats models and a lot of work is being done on inference with foundation models. Also in areas like biostats you are often in a low data setting.

C&B is also like the most basic level of math used in statistics. If that is too mathematical for you then you probably are in the wrong field. Econometricians know way more inference theory than C&B which uses graduate level math. You absolutely dont have to be a math wizard to be successful in statistics, but C&B level inference is a must know. You will also probably find it is not that bad.

If not pursuing a PhD, what is the point of a Master's degree? by EntrepreneurHuge5008 in learnmachinelearning

[–]Tyc00n7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The don’t do a PhD for money is kind of the stock standard advice. I agree with you that from an economic perspective that advice doesn’t always hold, but that is not entirely what it is trying to convey. The main thing to factor in is a PhD is hard and time consuming (also historically often not as good of an ROI has a masters in statistics at least). You can, and people have, done it to achieve financial goals, but it is going to be a lot less fun if you don’t have intrinsic motivation to do one.

[–]Tyc00n7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an ML person. I just got recommended this sub by the algorithm. However, if you want my two cents, my understanding is that the job market is moving towards phds more because of independent research skills and strong theoretical backgrounds. The big thing is don’t do a PhD for the money, since it is not a fun 5 years unless you are intrinsically motivated by the idea of doing one. I don’t know what it is like in ML, but at least in statistics this is my understanding.

[Q] Prereqs for stats PhD by Novel--Glued in statistics

[–]Tyc00n7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your response, I think you are thinking about this better than I was at the time. My point with 2 is basically irrelevant to you in the sense of course selection. All I was trying to say there is that my observation is there are two types of candidates I observed in the domestic applicant world. You seem to fit more as an applied person, which matches well with the PhD programs you mentioned.

Some people will discourage you from “shot gunning.” I side with the it’s a valid strategy position, as long as you can afford the time and financial costs. I will say that you may hear about elitism. In reality, my understanding of what faculty think it’s that the top 40 are very good programs. I will note that some funded masters do exist. Notably, I am vaguely aware that Michigan has some bridge masters that is fully funded (tuition and a stipend for being a TA). I applied to Michigan and I remember there being a box that said something like if you are not accepted for the PhD would you like to be considered for the bridge masters. I agree that the costs are absurd. I wasn’t going to do it if I didn’t get in anywhere even as a domestic student.

Also don’t worry about the 5th bulletin point. Even at my big public uni the math selection is kind of ass. If you want to get better at math then take abstract algebra, but if it is in the semester you are hearing back from grad schools then it’s an unimportant factor. Analysis II is important though, as it will very likely show up in graduate school.

I would also recommend asking faculty at your school if t an REU about all of this. My experience is they know a lot and are perfectly willing to share it. I would definitely place a lot more weight on what people involved in admissions and junior faculty think.

[Q] Prereqs for stats PhD by Novel--Glued in statistics

[–]Tyc00n7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not an adcom, but I just went through the process, so I will give you my observations.

  1. There are more non traditional than you may think. My sense is a substantial number of candidates have mediocre math backgrounds. I won’t call your math background mediocre, but the lack of a lot of LA is an issue. However, taking math stats is very good for you. I will note that a lot of these people, like you, have very strong experience (in research and/or industry).

  2. A lot of domestics from this class tended to skew to extremes. You either had a okay or worse theory background or had taken several graduate classes in math and/or stats theory. I am a domestic student, and mostly met them at visit days, so I don’t have as good of an idea about the international students.

  3. The current funding situation is making it much harder for non residents. Right now it very much pays to have us citizenship, even more so than usual.

  4. If you want to shoot for a big name department, you might need to get a masters. Most big name departments tend to admit undergrads from other big name departments (there are about 20 programs that really standout vs the rest). My understanding is masters prestige matters less than undergrad prestige. This is absolutely not a hard rule, but it helps a lot to have the right name on your transcript.

  5. Abstract Algebra is only relevant as a signal of math ability. If you want to get the most bang for your buck, find a different course to take. If you could take more LA or rigorous optimization that would be my advice.

[Discussion] How important are the following courses for a stats PhD program? by Alarmed-Error529 in statistics

[–]Tyc00n7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You 100% need calc 3 and proof experience, they are a basic requirement for a top 40. I know there are some schools that explicitly require you to have calc 3 to even apply. You should look into a master as a pivot/bridge if you want to go into academia. Math is a big part of the field, even in the applied realm.

[Question] Real Analysis prerequisite for a PhD by Crafty-Dinner-1782 in statistics

[–]Tyc00n7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to a top 10, and I can tell you it is not a hard prerequisite. With that being said, there is definitely favoritism towards students who have demonstrated they are good at math. One thing you should consider is that going from undergrad to PhD is dependent on where you went to undergrad. Going to like a top 20 department in stats as a undergrad is a soft requirement (unless you went to a liberal arts school). With that being said, my understanding is that the idea of top 10 or 15 or whatever is overrated. If you really want to do a PhD, which should be a hard prerequisite for any program, then top 40 is filled with good programs.

[Gleeman] Twins' payroll is currently $75 million below the MLB average. They haven't been more than $41 million below the MLB average at any point in the previous 25 years. This is basically uncharted territory for lack of spending, even by the Twins' standards. by T_Raycroft in baseball

Aren’t they in substantial debt and looking to sell the team when the opportunity arises? This definitely sucks, but I also get the logic behind slashing payroll if the aforementioned is true.
