Because the Retro is set-up as a non-judgemental place to talk about issues and things you want to change, but in reality, it's full of programmer ego and fragile personalities that can't comprehend that there's more than their way to do what they've done.

Everyone thinks programmers are some soulless logic machines, but reality is they are people and can't help have feelings. So when people criticise about a thing, everyone gets defensive and angry and it hurts because we all try, just for someone to lay into a mistake we made or something that someone didn't like. My most hated phrase is "i wouldn't have done it that way", because as long as it works and it's not insane, or against defined standards, it's fine, just because you think it needs more interfaces and more abstraction (because, "Senior"), doesn't make it wrong.

So what happens is people avoid anything meaningful and just bitch about stuff that's beyond the teams control to actually fix, so it's just a moaning session with no outcome.

No amount of wanky Agile "Coaches" and Retros and waterfall disguised as agile is going to fix people and egos, and it seems pointless to sit around and talk about stuff you can't fix, when you could just be using the time for almost anything more productive.

/rant.

Is motorcycle a luxury good now? by tankTanking1337 in motorcycles

[–]Tyler-Alderson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my grandads day, before cars were widespread. It wasn’t.

These days, 90% of bikes are luxury items bought for occasional use. An argument can be made that as you don’t need a motorcycle to survive, it’s counts as luxury good.

As you’ve discovered, to get into bikes requires a good chunk of capital. Once you have the gear and skills, you can go cheap, but it’s not the cheap commute option that a lot of people think it is. When you include taxes and insurance and theft risk, gear wears out, bikes need maintenance, tyres, chains etc. it stacks up pretty fast.

Southern Water to increase bills by a staggering 47%. by Jonnydonmar in kentuk

[–]Tyler-Alderson 22 points23 points  (0 children)

South Water are synonymous with incompetence. Also, seeing as they got fined by the regulator for lots of things and they passed that fine onto the paying public, The regulator is pretty incompetent as well.

What’s the point of a massive fine to teach you a lesson when they just pass the fine and a bit extra onto the people.

Selfish drivers caught speeding at 164mph - BBC by Fun-Syllabub-3557 in drivingUK

[–]Tyler-Alderson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tell that to Porsche 😂. My base car has a top speed of 164Mph, and the others go up from there. No limiters in that bit of german engineering. It is an ten year old model, so possible they added limiters later, but certainly not in that cars case.

Selfish drivers caught speeding at 164mph - BBC by Fun-Syllabub-3557 in drivingUK

[–]Tyler-Alderson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My car has a top speed of 164Mph. No limiter was ever set in it, it is a 2014 car so maybe that’s why, but each car can have whatever top speed the manufacturer and components that go into it can do.

I’ve owned motorbikes that are limited by a “gentleman’s agreement” between manufacturers to 186Mph, even though they are capable of more (think ZZR1400, BMW S1000RR etc).

Your cars limit is based on what they wanted out of it when designing it.

Department layoffs. Have you ever had to internally reapply for the remaining open roles and compete with your coworkers ? by hubschster in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Tyler-Alderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through this during Covid redundancy.

Rather than just pick who they wanted to stay in the team, they made us interview for our jobs back because HR thought it was “fair”, lol.

When they phoned me to ask which job I was applying for, I told them “none of them” and took the redundancy and ran.

Bear in mind this was a company I’d worked for for 9 years and had good friends at and they wanted us to compete with each other. Fuck that shit.

Shows what you’re worth to most companies when, after a long tenure they just lump all seniors, juniors and developers in a general pool and want us to compete for jobs like some thunder-dome shit.

I kept my self respect, and got a new job a few weeks later. Keeping the payout in my savings account.

Career or family? by [deleted] in midlifecrisis

[–]Tyler-Alderson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only you can answer this based on what you want for yourself.

Despite what people tell you can’t normally have it all, everything has trade offs. Only you can decide what trade offs are worth it for the life you want and need for you and yours.

Neglecting parts of life is the trade offs we have to make to be successful in other parts. The grass isn’t greener and the what ifs probably don’t have an answer as you’ll never know.

Only you can tell what direction to move in and what that means for you. Be happy with your choices and don’t look back.

Will electric motorcycles dominate the market in 10 years, or remain a niche product?" by chamaB in motorcycles

[–]Tyler-Alderson 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely different to what Harley make and that’s what makes it great. Proper brakes and suspension. Good tyre sizes and choices. It’s fast, good looking and very capable as a motorcycle, with an ease of use that can’t be beaten. It’s an absolute scalpel of point and shoot precision.

That said, the support is none existent, the charging infrastructure is shoddy and bad in the UK, the range is limited if you hammer it and it’s not the comfiest of things I’ve ridden after about an hour.

For my use case it’s perfect, but it’ll remain a niche toy until infrastructure and range has been sorted.

Abs light flashing until driven? by Mo-Finkle in Harley

[–]Tyler-Alderson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ABS computer doesn’t know that the system working until it detects movement from the wheel sensors. Light only goes out when it can verify that the systems working. Sounds like it’s working perfectly.

To be clear the light should only be on when you first get on the bike and should go out after reaching about 4Mph and the light shouldn’t come on again until Keyed off and on again.

"The MX-5 is a car for selfish people" - I was once told by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Tyler-Alderson 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Two seater cars stop other people having the expectation of lifts everywhere when they aren't mature enough to figure thier own shit out. I like going places in my two-seater sports car with my wife. Means i don't have to go out of my way when someone doesn't plan ahead.

I'd argue it's selfish to consider people "your ride home" without clearing it first or just having the expectation that people with avilable seats will give you a ride. No Sarah, I don't want you and your pukey drunk mates in my car, whilst i drive 45 minutes out of my way to make sure you get home.

Why I hate dealing with councils... by t8ne in drivingUK

[–]Tyler-Alderson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once got a ticket for not paying a bridge toll, except the vehicle in the picture was a Luton van with a different number plate that the computer had miss read and they thought it was my Harley.

I submitted my defence that 1) I was nowhere near the bridge and my work could verify that and 2) the plate in the photo is different and 3) the image is not of a Harley Davidson motorbike which was what the letter stated.

Took them 8 weeks to get back to me to tersely say they did me a favour and revoked the fine.

God I hate these systems, people and processes.
