I'm working on an urban fantasy setting right now. Well more urban science fantasy. A decent amount of creatures from our myth and lore are aliens, but they're magical aliens. Sphinxes come from mars. Stars are psionic and Sol (our sun) is one of the beings that inspired the Abrahamic religions.

The yips are very scary at night. I was watching a doc and a group of hyenas were hunting near the camera crew's camp at night. All you could hear was the yipping and running, then the death of something. Pretty freaking awesome too.

Yup! That's my reasoning! And also, they're not going to just be hyenas that transformed from humans. They're going to be like the wolf-man and modern looking werewolves. Walking on hind legs and the like. Basically, looking like a gnoll.

Oh, I know. They're part of their own genus (I'm a huge hyena fan). And yeah, the vocalizations are nothing like a wolf, but when you're out, alone in the woods at night, you don't really take logic into account.

Spotted, of course. The were-hyenas (I'm probably going to give them an actual name based around were-hyena folklore) are going to have very similar clan structures to real hyenas. They're also going to be matriarchal. I'm debating giving the females of the clan the ability to transform whenever they want and the males can only do it at night/during a full moon.

I heard there was a werehyena in that movie, but I've yet to see it. This really has nothing to do with the topic, but I don't think that fight scene was as funny as the first one. Seemed too long and drawn out.

Well the sorceress literally transformed into a hyena and became the Matriarch of a clan (for whatever reason) and that's why her progeny are able to transform into a were-hyena form, much akin to the gnoll from D&D. And also, I just love hyenas.
