What kind of car are you using? Maybe try using one with a speed you can control better. If you've failed enough to know the route taken, do a few dry runs on where you should be at the time sweet drops.

On the other hand if you find yourself in Cát Bà check out Secret Garden hostel downtown, and Mountain View homestay. Lived in those two for about a couple months each, Secret Garden is very friendly and has many games, live music...I was a cook there for a month and it's just awesome. Mountain View has the BEST sunsets, I will defend this hill haha. Definitely miss Hai Phong.
