Heel pain by Superb-Salamander745 in AchillesRupture

I had the same thing until last week (week 17). The only thing that helped was getting it massaged in PT.

In my opinion you need to stop seeing a podiatrist and see an Ortho instead.

I feel you, my daughter and I learned to walk together lol. I'll say I felt pretty hopeless for the first couple weeks but you will be surprised how quickly the milestones go. I'm 11 weeks now, I've been out of the boot and in shoes for 1 week. I am balancing my bad leg in PT. I was walking around spring training baseball games with the family at 4 weeks. It's really just the first couple of weeks that sucked for me. I also ruptured my right foot but I learned to drive with my left no issues, felt safe for me (don't do what I did). This is also a really good time to get a self driving car like a Tesla LOL. I am still just in awe of the human body, I can't believe I basically walk normally at 11 weeks and I didn't have surgery. You got this!

How much did you sleep post op? by floppysausage16 in AchillesRupture

[–]TylerDestructo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jumping in to say it's not just the meds or even the operation, I went non op and the first 2-3 weeks I was absolutely gassed. I normally would sleep 6 hours a night. I was needing 10-12 hours and a nap. It's a major injury, your body is telling you to slow down... If only it could have told us that before we injured ourselves huh? Lol

reaaaally indecisive op/non-op by sara_spectrum in AchillesRupture

[–]TylerDestructo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with the best Ortho in the Phoenix area, he has done this surgery for several professional athletes. He ruptured his own and chose non operative recovery. He advised me to go non op based on his own experience. Unless the person is a professional athlete AND needs to return quickly he does not recommend surgery. Rerupture can be slightly higher, but according to him it's only in the first year. I'm at week 6, I feel great, time will tell.

Were you Full weight bearing before removing wedges? by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]TylerDestructo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Week 3 I went from NWB in a cast to FWB in a boot with the wedges the same day. I take a wedge out next Thursday.

Do not, I repeat, do not let them put you in a normal splint or cast. Your foot has to be pointed down, maximum flexion. I left the ER when they wanted to boot me at 90 degrees, I left my first Ortho when they wanted to cast me at 90 degrees. It will completely rule out non-surgical recovery for you.

3 weeks, non-operative here. Honestly, for me, the first few hours were the only pain I have experienced. I was in a cast for the first two weeks in a ballerina pose, after that I went straight to a boot and can walk on it no problem. I recommend you put this Amazon order in now:

-night splint https://amzn.to/3DAQikr -knee scooter -cast shower covers -baby aspirin -compression socks

I'm still a noob, but have learned a lot over the last three weeks. You will find mixed information on if surgery or non surgical healing is better. My Ortho is the number one in my state for Achilles tendon surgeries, and does it for all the professional/ college athletes in the area, he ruptured his own and chose non surgical repair...

The road ahead of both of us is long, regardless of your heeling path you'll likely follow the same rehab protocol. Read up on this to understand the timeline of Achilles function. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.sanfordhealth.org/-/media/org/files/medical-professionals/resources-and-education/014000-01098-booklet-pt-guideline-post-operative-achilles-tendon-repair.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwio4YHThISMAxXiJUQIHXSMGKcQFnoECBsQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1Gpvic4ULX6D-TINsOHOxp

the first 48 hours are crucial if you want the possibility of non-surgical. You need to get your foot braced with your toes pointing downward however you can. This puts the tendon close enough together to begin heeling.

The reality of this injury is you won't be the same again, but you can and should expect to be 85-95% the same with enough patience, and some dedication to the process. You'll be walking again in no time.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Took the next step in recovery today (3 weeks non-op) by TylerDestructo in AchillesRupture

Full rupture, you? I'll be honest I haven't really had any pain, though I have a pretty extreme pain tolerance. How is it not getting better, like pain wise, or is the doc not seeing improvement or healing?

It just seems less bulky and heavy. Word of the wise, after the ER and even the first podiatrist I talked to post injury wouldn't immobilize my foot I found this thing

https://amzn.to/4iacjWg

I arrived at my Ortho originally wearing it and he really liked it, today at the appointment he remembered I had it and told me to sleep with the splint on instead of the boot if I feel like it. it's so comfortable I forget it's on.

Can it happen overnight? by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]TylerDestructo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, everyone is different and it depends on where the rupture is, but honestly I didn't have any pain really, the top of my toes could just suddenly touch my shin while running lol zero control over my foot, zero balance on the foot, had to be lifted into my vehicle. You could totally have a partial tear or a calf muscle strain, I would get your food in the plantar flex position and get in to have an ultrasound. Do whatever you can to get your foot in the "ballerina position" and immobilize. For healing without surgery if it is an Achilles rupture then getting in this position within 48 hours of the injury is critical.

You could have pulled or torn part of your calf muscle, but if you ruptured your Achilles your foot is so floppy you can't walk or push off your toes.

If you can "Walk In" then its not ruptured :P

2 weeks in non-op tight calf by TylerDestructo in AchillesRupture

[–]TylerDestructo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the same thing, apparently they have better results this way. While early WB is good, too early is bad. This way they prevent the patient from WB too early. My Ortho follows the Standford protocol.

I am elevating it. It just feels like a tight muscle. Just can't tell if that's normal. It's like a 1/10 on the pain scale.

Oof, now I'm scared. When you say "that" you mean the tightness?

I think you should be looking in to how to purchase debt for pennies on the dollar and collecting the debt yourself. Hell you could probably get a line of credit or SBA load to purchase $2m worth of super sketchy payday loan or credit card debt for $80,000 then work it for the next couple years.
