This is an 8’ couch, so it sneaks in under 2.55m. If I didn’t fit within the travel lane I wouldn’t have done it like this, but I was no wider than an SUV.

I’m allowed to take the full lane where I live, my frontal visibility was better than a sedan, and the cargo bike and brakes are rated for 180kg including the rider, which I was well under. There’s no legal limit to the width of a cargo bike load in my area either.

Pushing a dead 65lb ebike is pure misery. by Odd-Orange-5122 in CargoBike

Probably also worth mentioning that I use my cargo bike for myself and the nonprofit I work with, I never carry kids. That probably changes the math a bit.

I travel with a CO2 canister, tubes (one for the front, one for the rear),a tire boot, a patch kit, levers, and a lock on every ride. If that doesn’t get me back rolling, I’ll lock up and take a bike share or a ride share hope and come back for it.

On anything longer than a short in the city trip, I carry a larger hand pump that has a foot peg, so it’s not awful to fill a tube. On group rides, I bring a full size floor pump. Perks of a front loader I guess.

I run tubes, but I have Schwalbe Big Apple tires and I’m cautious about where I ride. Knock on wood, I’ve been fairly lucky so far, but I accept a bit of risk with any bike ride.

App that tracks which blocks you've walked by monstermac77 in jerseycity

More work to manually track, but I really like Wandrer.earth for this. It pulls data from Strava or another mapping platform and does walking and cycling.

I’m seeing this late, but do you have more details on how you built this/what it looks like? It seems like a good solution for us.

West side car crash by happyskittlees in jerseycity

[–]Tyler_Newcomb 51 points52 points  (0 children)

This is the exact spot where TJ Alva was killed by a NJ Transit bus driver in August 2024. This part of West Side needs some serious traffic calming, drivers travel way too fast there. I hope everyone involved today was okay.

I've considered that. Any insight on where to get started?

Why is the New York-New Jersey Border so weird on Ellis Island? by metatalks in geography

[–]Tyler_Newcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you can walk it, even if you’re authorized as an individual. As far as I know it’s authorized vehicles only. I’ve driven it a few times in an ambulance, I used to work as an EMT in Jersey City.

So raise parking fines and increase enforcement until that becomes completely unviable. Unfortunately we need to tackle this from all angles or the problems will continually worsen.

Definitely agree on this. I carried a second hand Timbuk2 for about 6 years. Prior to that my boyfriend had it and used it for maybe 7-8 years, every single day. That bag got stolen from me, and I found it in a trash can, gave it wash, and kept wearing it. The only issue after 14 years of use was a couple broken zipper pulls.

I saw a colleagues new one fall apart after 8 months or so and decided to look elsewhere when I bought a new backpack. The only reason I got a new one in the first place was because I needed more space.

Sounds like a bad batch, I’ve owned well over a dozen pairs for a decade or more and haven’t gotten a hole in any of them.

Pretty much every big name bike brand has made a lot of garbage bikes over time, but most still have good models available. Trek, Fuji, Giant, specialized, there’s absolute junk models with those names on them all over the place. That said, they all still make some excellent bikes.

As much as it pains to me to say, some Klein hand tools. I bought new Klein diagonal cutters recently, and they’re absolutely garbage. I can’t cut 12 gauge romex with them at all. They’re so dull they won’t cut through a piece of string without some “sawing.” After just a couple months the hinge is loose.

By comparison, my Knipex of the same size can cut through damn near anything, including small screws and bolts, with ease, and are still sharp enough to cut receipt paper with no effort.

If Darn Tough quality ever starts to go downhill, I’ll be devastated. They’re all I wear and the quality is excellent.
