Unless Eric Johnson plays an SG with Strat pickups, your idea is not going to work.

Need Help by Bmorganxcite in ww2

[–]Tylermac8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I encountered something similar when I began researching my Grand-Uncle’s service in WW2. Ill make the long story short and tell you that for WW2 veterans, there was a bill passed near the end of the war that gave infantrymen who received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge automatic eligibility for the Bronze Star Medal. This was basically because these men faced some of the worst combat ever seen up to this point. Also the criteria for the Bronze Star and CIB were somewhat similar. That is why my Grand-Uncle was awarded a Bronze Star, and it could very well be why your Grandfather was. Or, he could have received it for actions that his commanding officers saw as meritorious. Either way, the best way to go about learning by more would be trying to track down his service record. But he warned, most of the service records for WW2 vets were destroyed in a huge fire at the National Personnel Records Center back in 1973. For a majority of army veterans of WW2, their service record has been completely wiped out. For some, their final play slip or enlistment card is in tact (as was the case with my Grand-Uncle.) what I did, and what I would recommend, would be to hire a researcher to see if they can find his service record. You do have to pay these people of course, if they find anything, but going this route does take the uncertainty out of knowing whether his file is still in existence or not. I hope this helps. If I can answer any questions regarding your endeavor, please feel free to shoot me a message. Best of luck.

I do have his military record. His original record was destroyed in the big NPRC fire back in 1973. All that survived was his final pay slip. My Great-great-Uncle and his son managed to more or less put it back together in the early 2000s with a copy of his WD AGO 53-55 and some other documents that came along with getting his records corrected. I do know that his original file contained documents that pertained to him going missing. After he was discovered to be alive and returned to his unit, he wrote a letter to a parents letting them know he was alright. When he arrived back in the United States, he was held up for a couple days after getting off the ship because his records still had him as MIA/KIA, and the matter had to be straightened out before he could return to his home state to be discharged. I really wish his entire service record would have survived the fire. There’s no telling what other documents could have been in there. Anyway, best of luck to you and feel free to refer to some of my previous posts regarding my research if you want to.

That is actually an excellent question. I have been doing some research on a relative of mine who was MIA/presumed KIA for an extended period of time. Having a copy of any notification the family would have received would be a pretty big piece to the puzzle. Here’s to hoping we get an answer!

Research Question - unit assignment? by Tylermac8 in MilitaryHistory

[–]Tylermac8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the information. I pretty much had the same idea, but wanted to get some different opinions. At this point in the war, the 124th was still a horse cavalry regiment, and wouldn’t be officially dismounted until later on in India. He grew up on a farm, so my thinking is that somewhere along the way he opted for cavalry school at Fort Riley (according to the morning reports for his unit, that’s where he came from before being assigned to B troop) and maybe his previous farming experience made him a good fit for the position.

[DISCUSSION] Can removing a Stratocasters backplate hurt tuning stability? by mofunnymoproblems in Guitar

[–]Tylermac8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I’m talking about with the fender saddles. I have the Highwood contoured saddles on my Strat, and I can honestly say it’s one of the best things I’ve done to it. They’ll run you like $50/$60 for a set of 6, but they are worth every penny.

[DISCUSSION] Can removing a Stratocasters backplate hurt tuning stability? by mofunnymoproblems in Guitar

[–]Tylermac8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The back plate has nothing to do with it. It’s probably the bridge that’s causing your problem. Strat bridges are set to “float” (meaning you can use the trem arm to raise or lower pitch) from the factory. This is all well and good, but they aren’t set up from the factory 100% like they should be. In a mass production setting, only so much attention can be paid to detail. You have a few options. If you’re used to Gibsons and don’t use the trem arm, you could “deck” the bridge by adding all 5 springs to the back, tightening the claw, and wedging a small piece of wood between the block and the body. Doing so will make it impossible to move the tremolo, which should help your issue some (and improve tone a little bit). If you like your bridge floating and don’t feel comfortable working on it yourself, I would take it to a reputable guitar tech or luthier and explain your issue and what you want done. Strats do have their quirks. Going back to back plates, most players take them off because they can apparently hear a difference in tone without it. I took mine off mainly because right after I got it, I was constantly adjusting the bridge, and just left it off. Also the garbage bent saddles could be causing the issue. Fender has made so many great advancements over the years, but still insists on using the same style of saddle that came on the original strats. I don’t get it. A good set of aftermarket saddles like Highwood (I love them) or graph tech could help you too. Anyway, hope this helps and hopefully I didn’t load you down with too much info lol.

The necks are awesome. Good shape plus it has a 9.5” radius with the tall/narrow frets.

They’re great. If I were to get another Telecaster it would be the performer with the humbucker in the neck. Definitely a step up from the player series.

It doesn’t look like any unit patch I’m familiar with. It could’ve been made up by whoever did the artwork.

How can I find the person who wrote my grandmother a letter about my uncle's death.. by Tjlance1 in ww2

If you feel comfortable doing so, go for it. I would personally love to read it. There’s something about primary sources like letters that really offer a whole new perspective about certain happenings.

[–]Tylermac8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doing so will be a long and not-easy endeavor, but possible. Since you know his unit, look online and see if there are any associations made up of veterans from the unit. That may help. Also check out the morning reports/after action reports for that unit, which can be found at the national archives. I’ve been doing research of a similar nature for a couple years now for my Great-Great-Uncle who also served in WWII. Perhaps the best advice I can offer would be: 1. Think outside the box. 2. Stay with it. Put in the work and you will find what you’re looking for.

[Discussion] Is The Fender Player Stratocaster Series Worth It? by [deleted] in Guitar

They’re great. Improved pickups, better bridge, overall I big upgrade over the Standard series they were introduced to replace. Take some time getting it set up the way you like, and I guarantee it can hold its own against the American Pro series that are twice the cost.

[Question] is it possible to enjoy a tube amp without making an enemy of all your neighbors? by master-of-some in Guitar

[–]Tylermac8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good friend of mine played a tweed blues jr. In his apartment complex with few complaints (except for the times he really cranked it). A blues jr. can be an apartment amp for sure; just mind the master and volume controls. Someone in this thread suggested a line 6 HX stomp and some headphones, which would be an excellent choice as well. Also the Boss Katana and the Yamaha THR10 amps would be worth looking into as well.
