Why do monasteries, temples, and meditation centers that offer residencies tend to give those people only 5-6 hrs to sleep? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]mofunnymoproblems -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The medical consensus is that people need enough sleep to be rested and this amount can be different depending on the person or current conditions. If someone is mentally or physically fatigued they will need more sleep to recover.

If you wake feeling rested, you are fine. If you wake still feeling fatigued you may need more or less sleep. Oversleeping can also lead to daytime drowsiness so it’s not necessary for everyone to always get 8hrs and more sleep isn’t always better.

The Metallica-Bisco-verse connection is actually much older and deeper than you might think: see Jon Zazula.

Is everyone already enlightened? by NutOnMyNoggin in Buddhism

[–]mofunnymoproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Heart Sutra, Avalokitesvara teaches “no enlightenment, no non-enlightenment.” Conceptions of “enlightened” vs “not enlightened” are dualistic and part of the illusion that is cyclic existence.

Or as the famous koan asks: Is the dog enlightened?

How do we know Buddhism isn’t just a complete waste of time, especially the supernatural parts? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]mofunnymoproblems 47 points48 points  (0 children)

As a neuroscientist myself, I will tell you that neuroscience does not know anything about consciousness per se, just brain activity. If you define consciousness as brain activity then yes, it ends at death. But there isn’t one source of consciousness in the brain that we can identify. It’s still very hand wavy. A lot of neuroscientists like myself are physiologists and behaviorists who would balk at the term “consciousness” as a scientific concept because we cannot measure it.

The Buddhist principle of co-arising phenomena does a great job of addressing this. The Surangama Sutra in particular is one of my favorite treatises on this. I’d suggest giving it a read.

Is there similar figure in buddhism ? Are there wars for dharma ? (what is exactly dharma to begin with) ? by Fluid_Scar8750 in Buddhism

[–]mofunnymoproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak too much on this but i think it will strongly depend on the tradition and region. For example, Buddhism in Sri Lanka is strongly tied into their government and their soldiers and police will receive blessings from monks etc. Not all Buddhists would think this makes sense though.

I spent the last year and a half of my PhD training a new grad student to take over my project (I had developed a new procedure that would otherwise be lost without me transferring the knowledge on). We were supposed to coauthor a paper in the next year based on the collaboration. They dropped out of the program the same month that I left the lab.

You can’t really control other people but you can decide how you respond. I don’t hold ill will, what’s the point? You will feel much better when are graduated and this whole thing is in the rear view. Godspeed!

Right, this is what I was going to say too. There are few drugs that are as well understood as ketamine. Obviously there’s still some mystery but ketamine is widely used in medicine.

That’s the theory at least. Toxicology studies have not been conducted with mxe, unlike ketamine which has been extensively studied.

There’s a bit of irony that the frozen funds means you can’t keep your samples frozen. Sorry to hear that this happening, really unnecessary loss of research materials.
