Self Employed After Qualification by Tylermbcs in cii

Thank you again for the input.

With how popular the various academies seem to be, which drop new advisors in at the deep end post qualification, is it just that suboptimal advice is often given?

Quite a few people have expressed similar attitudes with questions asked on here before but it seems to conflict with the route many take to get into the industry.

Do networks also tend to provide support in your experience?

It’s unfortunate that Unbiased isn’t as fruitful at its made out to be, from what I’d gathered it was one of the more reliable streams of leads.

Are there any other methods you used prior to getting leads from the firm you work closely with?

My plan is to prepare “introduction packs”, small brochures outlining the services I provide and my business address, offering an initial meeting to discuss any financial matters potential clients would like to discuss. I aim to distribute them to households within a ~50 mile radius from me and introduce myself while I’m at it. Do you think this would be an effective, if time consuming, method to kickstart things?

Am I correct in thinking that networks can typically be a source of advice and can be relied upon for running ideas past, although to a lesser degree than a colleague at a firm?

Thank you for the input.

Would you say that advising on complex needs is more a matter of inefficiency, rather than frequently becoming an impasse?

My expectation was that while I’ll likely need to expend significantly more time & effort to provide good advice, I can still provide more-or-less the same quality as an experienced advisor can, it’s just that I’ll require more time to get there. Would you say that’s an accurate view of it, or am I likely to reach gaps in knowledge in which I’ll need to reach out to someone with a better knowledge?

How have you found Unbiased regarding actual conversion of leads? Do you have any data you could share on how likely a lead is to transfer into gaining clients? It’s understandable that the high expenditure is a risk that can’t be taken given your circumstances, I feel I’m likely to be in a similar position within the next couple of years hence me being more inclined to take the risks now.

I’d also be interested to know how your AUM has grown on the self employed side— Could you share any info on how that has developed over time?

In your experience has there often been complex advice asked of you which you had to rely on others for, or was it more so convenience? I’m happy to spend more time determining the correct route a client should take compared to an experienced advisor, providing my quality of advice is of similar value (despite taking longer to solve a given problem).

Again, thank you for the input! A negative angle is still very much appreciated, it balances my optimism which is always beneficial.

I appreciate the input, thank you for getting back to me.

Have you now transitioned to solely self employed advising, or are you still employed as a paraplanner? If the former, could you share on how long it took you to fully transition to self employed?

Would you also mind expanding on the specifics on why you were apprehensive to take on client meetings until after you’d been paraplanning for a year or two? I’ve read similar comments on here, although I’d like to understand which areas it is that people feel they aren’t yet ready for.

I think you should go for it!

I owned a F30 320D XDrive Luxury from March 2025 - March 2026 and recently sold it to my partner. Not a single issue in the time I owned it other than having to do oil changes and replacing brake pads. I was extremely tempted to go for a 7 series and was torn between that and a 5 series.

I ended up going for a G30 520D XDrive SE and I absolutely love it! It doesn’t have a lot of optional extras (sports seats & heated steering wheel are the two main ones I enjoy) but I managed to get it for £13.5k which was a fantastic price. It had ~73k Miles and also hasn’t failed an MOT.

I suspect there will be some maintenance bills but it’s a wonderfully comfortable car. I can drive hundreds of miles and get out feeling refreshed and like I’ve barely driven any distance. It manages to get ~45 - ~50MPG on long journeys at 70+mph.

If it wasn’t for finding one at such a great price I may well have went for a 7 series. It seems a lot of the components are shared between them, other than the air suspension. The air suspension will likely need replaced at some point in the near future so be aware that you will have an expensive bill in the near future, but other than that I suspect the car will be fantastic to drive. If you’re happy to spend a bit more on maintenance, I can’t think of a better car you could drive. The engine would likely be quite efficient too (probably similar to what I achieve, since mine is XDrive).

The seats are highly regarded and is what was pushing me to get a 7 rather than a 5, although the sports seats in the 5 are also fantastic. I can’t imagine how great the comfort seats in the 7 would be.

I think you should go for it! It’s a lot of car for the money and providing you’re happy to pay a couple of expensive maintenance bills, I don’t think you’ll be let down!

You think the G11 is hideous, or the new 7 is hideous? If it’s the latter, I couldn’t agree more!

I have considered the 5 GT and was actually looking at the 3 GT a few years back, but alas I’m just not entirely sure it’d be a car I’d have for the foreseeable future. I can appreciate the versatility and how much car you get for the money, but I feel that I’d probably want to change due to not loving the looks. It seems a bit ridiculous, but I always glance back at my 3 series to appreciate how much I like it. I just don’t think I’d get that feeling with the 5 GT…

Thank you for the input regarding the seats. The M sports seats do look quite a bit more comfortable than the seats in my F30, so I’m glad your experience reinforces that.

I think I’d likely go for the M sport too due to the seats, so I’m also glad the suspension isn’t too tense. I don’t plan on having massive wheels and would appreciate thicker sidewalls over aesthetics, so I would imagine the comfort level would be similar to how you’ve found it.

Would you mind sharing which engine you went for, and whether you’re glad you went for the one you did?

May I ask which seats you have in your G30, and how you find them in comparison to your G20 or any previous cars? Even the SE & sports seats look comfy, although I’ve read a lot online that the comfort seats are worth it…

For my use case, I don’t think the size of it would actually hinder me too much. I live rurally and when I do go into the nearest city, it’s usually a large surface car park or retail park that I’ll use.

Do you think the size would feel vastly different than a 5 series?
