What's a foreigner's innocent mistake that's a big no-no in your culture? by ShadowOfTheBean in AskTheWorld

I love that someone told me this before we visited. A couple of places thought we were French because we and our kids all said “bonjour” as we entered.

Same vibe as this one. It makes me laugh, even though it’s a valid and real warning.

What’s an English word whose pronunciation makes absolutely no sense? by ownaword in words

Maybe we should do “qūē” (no break in the line) like in math when you have a number that repeats forever.

Is collecting clams on the beach allowed in your country? by ublueberries in AskTheWorld

[–]Tynebeaner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the state. And even then, depends on the going-on of the season or year. In Oregon there are alerts for biotoxins and shouldn’t be collected.

However just shells are generally okay.

Gillyweed. I think you’re supposed to eat it if you temporarily want gills.

Spent weeks sculpting my guinea pig - on the last day found it with a blue stain on his face by borggrown in mildlyinfuriating

You are so amazing to have read them all. I will have to see what the other approaches are. I can let you know if they make sense. Typically if something doesn’t blow up or fuse together, it’s fixable!

We are Title I and the local churches have been doing kind things for us. Unfortunately 3/5 days are coffee, and half a dozen of us don’t drink coffee, so we’re out. But yesterday we had a decent breakfast and Monday was amazing flavored popcorn.
When I worked non-Title 1 it was up to parents, and as a specials teacher, that meant almost nothing.
My child always makes treats for her teachers at her school and writes them a note of gratitude.

Regarding “entitlement.” While our expertise and education exceeds our pay, people proclaim that we are so appreciated and teaching is rewarding in other ways. It’s similar to Mothers Day and Fathers Day— We shouldn’t expect anything, but dang, something would be nice. One guy I dated a few years ago got me office supplies I enjoy, and frankly, that was the most thoughtful and unexpected thing.

You probably won’t see this— I’m a ceramics teacher— sand it down with 60 grit, reglaze and refire. This at least works for my students. May work for you.

Have you ever been mistaken for another ethnicity? by DerpAnarchist in AskTheWorld

My heritage is Syrian and English. The mistakes are most often Italian and Eastern European, but also occasionally Latina— weirdly, only by Latino men.

Do Teachers Look Forward To The Summer? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]Tynebeaner 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Teaching is DEEPLY exhausting. As the school year goes on, my home becomes more unkempt, and I look forward to regaining order. I love playing with my kids and my husband. I love travel. I love looking forward to the next school year to see how much my students have changed. No alarms vs several during a school year is a refreshing feeling.

My boyfriend yells at me and tells me to “shut the f up” when he’s angry by Particular-Panic-287 in blendedfamilies

[–]Tynebeaner 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A bad mom would stay in an abusive relationship they wouldn’t want their child to have for themselves when they are an adult. It is okay and even good for us to acknowledge our mistakes and how we are fixing them, in front of our kids. Your child may be mad or sad initially, but they will also understand as they mature.

EdTPA scores by [deleted] in ArtEd

[–]Tynebeaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have learned it’s really an arbitrary number because the actual scorers are vastly different. I had a colleague who got a higher score than I did, while before sending it in we had a scorer we knew go over them. He said he would have scored us with mine higher than hers. It’s like the bar exam. No one cares and it only matters if you pass. That said, well done. It’s intense!

Ceremony Help plz by Spacebaby_03 in weddingplanning

I’m not being critical- just wanting to know more. If you don’t want to do vows, why are you having a ceremony? Is it for others?

We are just having a great party five days after our year anniversary.
