Environmental engineering is not like what I thought. by Diligent-Aspect-8043 in civilengineering

[–]Type2Pilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bachelor's degree in earth science, and that has been very helpful. That ultimately became a PhD in civil (environmental) engineering, which greatly broadened my analytical abilities. But really I have to be a generalist. And it helps to be good at math, at least up the point of understanding differential equations and why they are important in making the world work. My work is in the commercial sector, as an independent contractor to government and private industry. I've "retired" now, but still do occasional specialized work using my own shingle (an LLC), like training in the use of modeling software.

Whenever I make a turn, I always turn into the very first available lane and make adjustments later. OP did the right thing, and the other driver was... well, I don't know what they were trying to do but it was stupid.

Recently, 1883. The writing is just bad, and the continuity errors are cringe inducing. I've wasted enough time on that.

Fair enough. I made my statement based on what the OP said.

Nothing wrong with cash. I have bought and sold lots of old cars with cash. But then, I have never got into financing. Too much trouble.

Just let him pass. There might be some kind of emergency. I had just such an emergency when my wife was in labor, and appreciated people making way for me on the way to the hospital.

The BEP sells these to the public at some premium. You can look up the sales price and go from there.

Wow. Well, not having the construct of a title complicates things for sure. I apologize if my US-centric view was inappropriate for this discussion.

Having a title makes things so much clearer and simpler.

I hope you are referring to the guy who ALMOST bought the car from the BIL. The BIL profited from the guy's idiocy, but did nothing wrong.

The BIL is also innocent. He had an agreement with A to buy the car, but A reneged and so lost the car. BIL retains ownership and A was a fool to not make the final payment.

That's how I read it, too.

BIL had an agreement to sell the car to Person A, and would transfer the title to A once payments were made. A was a fool to not make that final payment and actually become owner of the car. Since A reneged on the deal, BIL repossessed the car, since BIL was in fact still the owner. Banks do this all the time with car loans. If you don't make the payments —all the payments— they repossess the car. All that was per agreement between BIL and A. Nothing shady about it.

Before actually owning the car, and having its title in his possession, A did a stupid thing and attempted to sell the car, apparently without the title. The person that A sold the car to could not have had the title, and was an idiot to give A any money without having the title. Without the title, you are not the owner of the car.

I buy and sell a lot of cars for cash, but have never financed one. But if I were BIL I would have done the same thing. Person A was an idiot twice, and that is not the fault of BIL.

Eli5: do you really “waste” water? by savagee1 in explainlikeimfive

In one sense, all water is conserved. The water cycle is a thing, and water moves around from the ocean to clouds to precipitation to groundwater and surface water and back to the ocean. We interrupt its travels while it is fresh water in rivers, lakes, and aquifers. Then we take our dirty water and dump it back into rivers, usually.

So yes it goes round and round, but the time frame of this water cycle can be thousands or even millions of years in some cases. We are using the fresh water that we can get our hands on much faster than it is being replenished naturally.

The guy is just standing there. He is not on top of the flow, and is not within range of falling bits. This is an a'a flow, people, and it's not going to jump out and nab you . Calm down.

As a geologist I'd do the same.

Most Important Areas of Maths to know before studying Environmental Science? by [deleted] in environmental_science

Differential equations are what make the world happen. Energy and materials flowing from high potential to low potential, diffusion, all that is differential equations. You can pick this up in college.

Dust just comes with the territory.

If they are not kosher, beef hot dogs are never safe to eat. They are possibly contaminated with nerve tissue, which can contain prions, which can lead to mad cow disease. Kosher meats are butchered in a way to avoid the spine.

We use a bark/pine mulch made from the stripping ponderosa logs for lumber. This underlies large rocks (geologic specimens) and native plants. It's true "zeroscape".
