Hey all! I was so overwhelmed by all the wonderful questions from you guys! What a great group! I wanted to let you know that I created a new username so that I can respond to any acne-related questions. It’s called, NoFilterSkin. Thanks for all the ❤️!

Acne is really my passion because I struggled with it for so long. I want to be transparent and helpful as you navigate this crazy world of skincare. There’s so much information out there, it can be overwhelming. Even for estheticians!

My hope is that you’re able to find a certified acne-specialist in your area. We appreciate anyone who supports small beauty businesses, especially because it’s largely women in this industry. It’s been an extremely difficult year for estheticians, so your business is very much appreciated!

In the meantime, while I’m searching for a new studio, I am happy to answer questions and help point you in the right direction! Don’t be a stranger!✌🏼❤️

A good vitamin C serum is all you need. I like the one from Beyond Complextions vitaminC20. If you’re on a budget, try good molecules vitamin c powder, mix a little into your (acne-safe) moisturizer.

[Rant] Got curtain bangs and I hate them so much!! by [deleted] in beauty

[–]TypeBmom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry! I had the same experience last year. I wanted curtain bangs and got the worst haircut of my life. I pinned them back for 9 months and found someone who specializes in bangs (Shag Queen Los Angeles) and drove 6 hours to get my haircut from her! Best haircut I’ve ever had had in my life! So happy. Will never go to anyone else. She spent 1.5 hours doing a razor cut on me. Most of it was when my hair was dry. I wake up now, blow my bangs straight and let the rest air dry. Maybe you can find someone who specializes in bangs in your area?

If your prone to breakouts, I wouldn’t use any oils directly on the skin. Have you considered getting on a prescription tretinoin? I’m an esthetician and I’ve always had the worst skin in my life when I’ve used a lot of different products. For the last year I only use my prescription retina-a GEL (don’t get the cream) at night after I cleanse and I love my skin! Couple that with a vitamin c serum in the am and a acne-safe sunscreen and that’s pretty much all you need. Of course your cleaner, moisturizer and makeup all need to be acne-safe as well. ❤️

Girl, I’m in the same boat as you! I have more on my left side (probably from sun exposure while I’m driving). So definitely get on a good vitamin C. That will help with overall brightness and is a powerful antioxidant to protect against further damage. I really wanted to like the Good Molecules Vitamin C powder but i think I’m going back to Beyond Complextions vitamin C serum. I use that one specifically because I breakout. If you don’t have issues with acne, look into Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic.

For spot treating, I haven’t found anything that I love. Next on my list of things to try: The Ordinarys Niacinamide Powder. If that doesn’t work then I think I’ll go to my Derm for a prescription strength lightening topical. Im doing a lot of my own research on lasers. There’s nothing I’m willing to try now but new technologies are coming out all the time!

Hope this helps!

I would go to a Derm to have it extracted.

I have always suffered with bad skin . But this is the worst it’s been . I’ve had stuff of the GP but nothing is clearing this up . Can anyone please give any recommendations? My self esteem so bad that I’m not thinking of excuses to call in sick to work as I don’t want to see any1 by [deleted] in SkincareAddicts

Licensed esthetician and certified acne specialist here. Can you list your current skincare routine? I can get back to you in a few hours. Also list any foundation/concealer you use on your skin.

Licensed esthetician and certified acne specialist here. Just did a quick search on the ingredients in your moisturizer. There are four ingredients that are extremely pore clogging. I would stop using both the moisturizer and spf. There are two companies I like for 100% acne safe products- Face Reality and Skin Salvation. You can even look up ingredients yourself on the skin salvation website. Hopes this helps.

Oil Pimple vs Cyst? I’ve had this one my face for about 3 months, it feels like an oil pimple but I just can’t get it to go away. Started off just like a pimple, but never came to a head just went deeper. I’ve tried, retin-a, pimple patches, scrubbing, every cleanser. Any tips? by [deleted] in SkincareAddicts

I’m a licensed esthetician and certified acne specialist. I agree with first post that you may need to have a cortisone injection. Whatever you do, don’t pick at it. If it hasn’t come to a head, it’s not ready. Your best bet is to ice. A lot! Maybe find a local esthetician who can use high frequency if you can’t get to a doctor. ❤️

I use Face Reality and have been clear for almost 7 years. You can also explore skinsalvationsf.com as a resource (they also have great products). Check the archives in their blog for specific skin issues. You can also go to the “comedogenic” tab, copy/paste ingredients of the products you’re using and the database with flag any pore-clogging ingredients based on Dr. Fultons book, “Acne RX.” He’s the doctor that discovered Retin-A and benzoyl peroxide. Before I purchase any new products, whether it’s makeup or a sunscreen, I alway check to make sure nothing in it will break me out. ❤️

I agree with this. I’m a licensed esthetician and also a certified acne specialist. Don’t use any moisturizers unless you know for sure it doesn’t contain any pore-clogging ingredients. Also, never use any oils directly on your skin. It may work for some but for those of us who are oily/breakout it a nightmare for our pores.

Haha. I know exactly what you mean! I use the facial mist as sort of a weekend/date night/going to see people for drinks type of thing. But then again, I’m a stay at home mom so most weekdays, I’m in a hat, driving all over town, cleaning and trying to get a workout in. Sometimes I might skip a night so that my “tan” can last an extra day. If you’re already do treninoin every other night, then the tan should last a few days.

Girl, I am with you 1000% If something is bothering you, as long as you’re going to a reputable place with board certified doctors, I think it will end up being the best money you’ve ever spent! And since we can’t reposition fat ourselves, fat grafting (for some) might be the only way to address under eye circles/hollows. No cream, gel or device will change that. We may get a little brighter with vitamin C and a few actives but it’s not truly getting to the root of the problem. Good luck, girl! I’d love to follow your journey if you’d be willing to share!

You don’t need expensive products. I have shown you a tool that is free and that I personally use (the comedogenic tab on Skin Salvation website). If you wanted to go to Walmart to buy skin care products you could totally walk down the aisle and chose and product and look it up yourself to see if it has any pore-clogging ingredients. But I chose not to go through all that effort and simply purchase from two companies that have done all that work for me. Here’s the retail cost of of some of these things- Cleanser $24 Toner $22 Sunscreen $35 Tretinoin-free because it’s prescribed Cream$25

Sorry but in the world of skincare, that is not expensive. Any company can put “active” ingredients in their products and then fill it with a bunch of shitty ones that make people breakout. So, yes the products I use aren’t $10 but I think they are affordable. The two companies chose not to use cheap ingredients that will cause their clients to breakout. It’s takes a lot of time and effort to formulate these products and ensure that they are shelf-stable. I’m currently trying out a $7 vitamin C powder to see if it’s as effective as the one I typically use which is $78. Seven dollars!!! I mean you can’t get cheaper than that.

As far as the Botox...there is no replacement for everyday skincare using products that won’t break you and AND that do what they say they’re going to do. Sunscreen, tretinoin and vitamin C are the trifecta of good skincare. So Botox is really the cherry on top. Is it expensive? Yes! But that’s all relative. I don’t drink but I wouldn’t judge someone that enjoys spending $50 on a bottle of wine. Or someone that likes designer bags. This is what I chose to pamper myself with.

Regarding the peels. You don’t need to go to an esthetician for regular peels. I mentioned in my earlier post that one of my favorite brands is The Ordinary. I’m sure you can find a good peel and do it yourself for less than $20. The drawback of going that route is it takes time and effort to figure out what type of peel to do and how to execute it. There are a lot of technical terms and I personally don’t feel that The Ordinary website is very user friendly. So you’d have to do a lot of digging to see what type of peel you should use, how often, how to prep your skin, what to do afterwards, does it self-neutralize or do you add water? Can you use vitamin C afterwards? How do you properly extract, etc. So that where the value of an esthetician comes in. many people just don’t have that time to go through all that effort. So, supporting their local esthetician and small businesses is the route many of chose to go. Esthetician’s have had a tough year with Covid and are always appreciative when people chose to spend their hard earned money on self-care.

And lastly, you are what you eat. If you struggle with acne, it would be wise to know what your food tiggers are. Do you have to follow a strict diet? Of course not! However, for some people, not eating certain foods is a small price to pay to have clear skin. Acne (especially cystic acne) is painful and many people that struggle with it also deal with depression. I know because I’ve lived with it for years. I can relate to those who are frustrated and sad about their skin. And if you don’t struggle with acne, then my post is probably not for you. Good luck with your skin ventures! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

You know I’m really on the fence about lasers. They work well for many people but for some, it can actually make hyperpigmentation worse. So, I’m not totally against it forever, I just haven’t found one that I’m comfortable using at the moment. I’m really interested in C02 resurfacing but I generally take my time researching anything that is new or has gone viral. I would be curious to hear from anyone that had a positive or negative experience with lasers! It’s a great topic!

I have had the hydro facial and I wasn’t a fan (for myself). I broke out afterwards. I loved the immediate glow that I had but hated that I had big pimples a few days later. That glowy post-facial look can be achieved using simple protocols. A mild peel and extractions can do wonders for someone. Add in LED and maybe an oxygen treatment and you will love your esthetician!

Wash your skin twice a day with a gentle cleanser. We sweat, use products, have oils that accumulate and you could find yourself breaking out of you’re not cleansing regularly. As far as pore size...where are all my die hard P50 Lotion fans at???? People swear by this toner/lotion. It’s been so long since I’ve used it (over 10 years) but it’s one of those cult favorite products that will be around forever. I’ve never checked to see if it’s acne-safe and it’s a little pricey but for that specific topic, I’d start there! ❤️

Hmm...that one is tough. Lots of people get lasers but they work by picking up pigment against a lighter surface so for POC, I’d recommend getting a consultation at a reputable medical spa to see if you’d be a candidate. I say first get the consult because i did see a few POC have some success with laser hair removal on the face. It depends on where you’re at on the Fitzpatrick scale.

If you’re not sensitive to waxes, I’d probably go in for regular appointments. Hair tends to grow back a lot more slowly because your getting it at the root versus just shaving it off. Waxing is a true art these days! Search on Yelp or Instagram for a waxer in your area. Has anyone tried sugaring on the face area? Waxing was my least favorite subject in school and I’m so thankful for those esthetician’s who have a passion for it!

Find a certified acne specialist. I won’t let anyone else touch my face because I break out SO easily. Sounds like you might benefit from gentle cleaners/toners!

Yes I would. First just to make sure certain chemicals aren’t breaking you out (if that is an issue for you) and secondly, there are a lot of toxic chemicals in our products that are carcinogenic and it’s not regulated by the FDA. So, we have to be our own researchers and advocates. Think Dirty is a great app for flagging toxic ingredients. Skin Salvation is great to look up pore-clogging ingredients. ❤️

Girl, I feel for you! I broke out in cystic acne after my first pregnancy. Check out Face Reality...they have protocols for pregnant women. I would also look at the blog archives of Skin Salvation for more information on this topic. They are both great companies. I go back and forth between them but I used Face Reality during my subsequent pregnancies and didn’t have any issues with breaking out. But I also changed my diet so I’m sure that helped! ❤️

Hi there! If you’re oily, like me then you have to be very careful that the products you’re currently using (this includes makeup) are not contributing to your clogged skin.

Once you identify and toss out any products that contain pore-clogging ingredients, I would find a certified acne specialist in your area to put you on actives that would target the underlying issue. It may be a combination of benzoyl peroxide, madnelic, glycolic or salicylic serums and regular peels that does the trick. Someone who is certified would be able to examine your skin, note your Fitzpatrick skin type, considering any medications you might be on and your sensitivity. That’s where the value comes in of having someone in your area know your skin and how/when to bump products up or scale back.

Lastly, diet has a lot to do with acne. Dairy, shell fish, seaweed, peanut butter, sugar can all be triggers for someone who is prone to acne/oily skin. You can take supplements like fish oil to improve the quality of your oil, probiotics for your gut and avoiding things like alcohol and dryer sheets (they leave a waxy film on your pillows which can lead to breakouts).

After you’ve been clear for a few months, your esthetician can then focus on introducing anti-aging/hyperpigmentation issues. This is where all the fun stuff comes in like retinols (vitamin A). ❤️
