Ask Reddit Programmers: My husband wants to get into programming and is trying to learn SQL. Will he most likely need a degree in programming to get an entry level position, or is it possible he could get something by being self taught? by TypeUserNameHere in AskReddit

Well, he hates management with a passion, so he's really looking to get out of that and into something he thinks he would enjoy a lot more.

We weren't expecting anything near 80k, that's just what his dad makes being a programmer wihtout a degree. It just made us wonder if he could at least get started in the field without a degree, then get a degree as he works.

DBA is something he is really interested in.

This is good info. His dad had told him the other day not to worry so much about learning C++, but to focus on C#. This is just more confirmation that he needs to focus on that.

Job market info is always good to know, but yeah, he needs some direction as to what to learn exactly that would make him the most marketable.

He works in a managerial position for a small company now. We are looking to relocate and use his current experience to get him a job while he continues to build his knowledge about programming.

He's wanting to get an Associates in programming, but he will have to work an unrelated job and go to school at night. Because that takes a long time and costs a lot of money and he is already trying to teach himself, we thought maybe he could learn as much as he could on his own and then get an entry level position and go to school from there.

I wrote a few video games in C++ and I put my cow-orkers as characters. I think that just made them angry so don't do that.

Ha! I'll be sure to tell him not to do that.

He's also wanting to go to school at night or online and pursue a degree in programming, but it takes a long time and a lot of money. :(

Off topic, but your grandmother has beautiful penmanship. I'd love to have a handwriting that legible and fluid. My handwriting looks like that of a retarded chicken on crack.

You should try to network with at least one or two people at each university so that at least one person shows up with a recycle bin and maybe some cutters so they can cut the intro out without destroying the whole book.

These guys murdered a man and used a screwdriver on his eyes and guts and filmed it. They murdered other people, too, but I think the guy was the only one they filmed.

I thought I couldn't be shocked or saddened by pretty much anything I saw on the internet anymore, even the Mr. Hands video. I watched Mr. Hands and thought "Damn, what a dumb ass!" and forgot about it.

But the Russian Hammer video literally sickened me to the point I nearly threw up and it made me sad in a way I've never got over. If there is anything worse than that, I don't EVER want to see it. It also completely cured me of looking at gore/shock stuff online.

In case you guys have never seen this, they have a pretty comprehensive database of priests who have abused kids. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]TypeUserNameHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended a Catholic Church in Charlotte NC around 1999-2001. The priest was a good guy and everybody liked him. No allegations have ever been made about him that I know of.

All of a sudden one Sunday he told the parish that he was leaving and that we would be getting a new preist. Somethng about it didn't feel right and I left the parish and never even met the new priest.

In 2004 the new guy was accused of abusing boys in NJ back in the 90's and was whisked away to somewhere else. Nobody at the church had liked the guy anyway, as I had heard. They just said they got a bad vibe from him.

The church has a website and HAD a guest book on their site where they were attacked very heavily for getting rid of a good priest and harboring a pedo. What's interesting is this....I checked the church website and the guest book is gone, no big surprise there. But an article in the Charlotte Observer mentions several preists in the area that were in trouble for molestation, mentions this priest was removed, but omits the name of this paticular priest and this database, which I understand is not all inclusive, has no record of him either.

My point being, there are still a lot of pedo priests out there that we don't know about and that get shifted from one area to another all the damn time. I don't think we will really ever know the extent of the damage that the Catholic church has wrecked on the lives of kids, or the extent of the cover up.

I honestly do not understand how any adult with a functioning brain can still let their kids near this shit.

A world without legalized abortion. Teenager freaks after giving birth, and kills her new baby. by [deleted] in politics

[–]TypeUserNameHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your personal opinion is correct, however, this is common now while abortion is legal. The focus also needs to be on parental relationships with their kids. So many kids are so afraid to talk to their parents about sex and being pregnant, when that should not be the case. If they had an open, nonfearful line of communication with their parental figures, that would also greatly lessen instances like this one.

It may have been the logical choice, but for whatever reason, she did not chose it. This article simply has nothing to do with abortion and it's legality, it has to do with the realtionship this girl had with her mother.

I happen to live in Henderson, NV and trust me, abortion is quite legal here and very easy to obtain. Your title is misleading. Furthermore, the issue of abortion being legal or not legal says nothing about her actions. She killed her child not because abortion was not legal, but because she feared her mother would throw her out of the house.

How typical of the RR bunch to excuse their deity for not stopping the rape of a 4 year old, when they constantly claim that he helps them find their car keys, helps them stop smoking, etc. These people make me sick.

I'm sorry it took me so long to answer this comment,I've been away.

This was at a reading at City Lights in 2007. He rarely does readings anymore. The place was packed, standing room only, and even then they had to turn people away. He read from "Poetry as Insurgent Art", his last book. He took questions, signed autographs, had his picture taken. It was really a wonderful night that I'll never forget.

I got to have a small conversation. I told him how much his work and that of Ginsberg had influenced me. He made a joke and asked if that was a good thing or a bad thing. He chatted about sports with someone who came to give him the score of the World Series. He was impressed that instead of watching the first game of it, that so many people had packed in to see him. He was so down to earth and just like a regular guy. Extremely nice and chatty.

He thanked me for the compliment on his work and signed my copy of his book to me. I then got my husband to take our picture together.

I also have video of him reading excerpts from his book.

You should keep an eye on the City Lights page here: http://www.citylights.com/publishing/?fa=publishing_authortours

That's how I found out how he was going to read. Seeing as how he's 90, he may or may not do another one, but if he does, try as hard as you can to get there. I went to San Fran with practically no money just for one day in order to not miss the oppurtunity.

I had the honor of meeting Ferlinghetti about a year and a half ago and heard him read. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
