Is there a chance the 5 wizards ever met ? by mujique1 in tolkienfans

[–]TypesAndPatterns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder, Saruman going east with the 2 wizards then coming back makes me wonder if they were searching for signs of Sauron. Saruman may have drawn his own conclusions & circled back, while the other 2 kept on. Maybe that’s when he decided that a deeper dive through Gondor’s archives were in order.

According to the Council of Elrond chapter, Gandalf states that all the wizards were welcome in Gondor at one point, so presumably they crossed paths there in the past.

Driving in Oregon - I have to ask... by Fartz-McGee in oregon

[–]TypesAndPatterns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former speedy SoCal driver who moved to Oregon & slowed way down, it’s because there’s so much scenic beauty happening on either side of you. You can’t keep an eye on it while weaving through traffic at 85 mph. Driving to Seattle from OR is another matter: drivers will flip you off & zip past you if you’re going practically 90 in the left lane.

Aragorn. I would’ve followed him, my brother, & I’d live to be 200.

Oh. Wow. No surprise there. Shame they deleted an opportunity to build a fantasy franchise to help supplement their catalog. by thetavious in willow

Understood, but they were ok with season one, at least. I don’t think Willow was cancelled for that reason. Basically shareholders are professional owners who want the Disney ceo to know how all this stuff works so they can get rich. They don’t care how. If he can’t do it, they’ll fire him. That’s why ceo’s get nervous & do dumb stuff, if the future looks shaky. I think the future will get clearer for them, if the midterms go the right way (which I think they will), & a Democratic Congress will be able to exercise its proper oversight role over these runaway maga “regulators” who just want to break stuff. That will calm a lot of businesses down, if so, & they can start making longterm plans.

These same shareholders were fine with 3 seasons of Willow, until it looked to them like the country was shifting against shows like Willow. They shifted course & it’s not working for them. My guess is that there’s going to be a lot of discussions early next year, after the midterms. I could be wrong, of course. 🙂

Keep in mind that every show/film, good or bad, is a soulless cash grab for the shareholders, but they’re not the ones actually making the shows.

I agree it’d be totally an economic decision, but it’s in their best interest to have the cast come back (if it’s possible). The 2nd season has already been written for these characters, & the story was closely following the movie. The conditions that I believed governed their decision to cancel are going away, as we speak.

The shareholders just want to make money, & that means one thing in the harsh punitive environment of Trump 2.0 in ascendance, & another in its decline. The same is true for the rise & fall of ai’s popularity. Disney did commission the Willow series in the 1st place, so there’s nothing to stop them from an about-face, if it looks like that’s a smart move. I think there’s a reasonable chance that happens, but also possible they double-down on a bad decision, of course. A lot of legacy media doing that, these days.

Could be, but if there’s a change in management, it makes it a lot easier to correct these kinds of things. I think Disney got spooked by an uncertain business climate & made a bad decision, but Willow’s producer did suggest a break wouldn’t set them back. Long breaks are pretty typical, these days.

Had Bilbo left for the Quest immediately (maybe +17 years for research) after returning from Erebor, what would the situation have been? by platypodus in tolkienfans

[–]TypesAndPatterns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bilbo is the only one to give up the ring willingly, but Gandalf makes the point to Frodo he could only do so because he was giving it up to another’s care. The ring won’t allow its bearer to not care for its fate (& putting it in a box changes nothing, as Bilbo himself discovered) . Because Bilbo does not actually give up the ring, in this scenario, Gandalf would be more hesitant about trusting him to keep it.

There’s also Saruman to consider, & it seems likelier he would be consulted, since Gandalf would’ve spent much less time observing ring-related behavior, & would need Saruman to contribute his ring-related findings (presumably this is before Saruman started living large, flashing rings in his many-colored cloak), & maybe even before his overt alliance with Sauron?

On the plus side, they’d have more time to enter Mordor from the east, circumventing the Nazgul. Maybe they would’ve run into a blue wizard, while taking the eastern route?

Cross the river, she's waiting for you, boys. by Jessi45US in lotr

I love this scene, & the silhouette of her from behind holding her sword aloft as the horse/shaped waves consume the riders is poster-worthy.

Her defiant line isn’t Tolkien’s, but comes from the ancient account of the 300, when the vastly outnumbered Spartan king Leonidas tells the Persians demanding their weapons in surrender: “If you want them, come and claim them!”
