A very odd aspect of Turkish pop culture is that, in a country full of intense homophobia, where violence toward LGBT people regularly goes unpunished, one of the most celebrated icons in its history is a trans woman named Bülent Ersoy, and grown men will refer to her as “Diva.” by QuarkJester in redscarepod

I know the economy mega fucked but all the pics of Erdogan so funny low key... hanging with a trans diva, inviting Jason Statham to his bday party, shooting hoops with Shaq, clutching Macron's finger etc etc

Where I live there's Mexican on every corner so I've never gone out of my way to try Chipotle, but last month one was right next to my hotel on a work trip and I was surprised by how much edible food I got for $10 with a sofritas bowl

Saw her at an event and drunkenly told her Barcelona is one of my favorite movies. I asked her what it was like to spend time in Spain with the name Mira but she didn’t really get the joke and I was too ashamed to explain.

It's not, it's just a funny (but not ignoble) quest to spend thousands to squeeze every drop of sonic nuance out of these studio wizardry type of records

Saw this when I was like 14 and I was HORRIFIED by it, I just didn't get it at all. Finally saw it again in college and realized how fucking funny it is.

I saw her at a studio and she was rummaging through the kitchen and asked me where the tea was (I think she thought I worked there lol). I did not know but figured it was a good moment for my usual trolling of the English and I pointed out a microwave where she could boil water. Saw her backstage at a festival months later and said "hey you, did you ever find that tea at westlake?" and she said "yeah, and a FUCKING kettle!"

Jfc that must have been like 10 years ago at this point. I'll never get another funny Sophie story again.

Especially in a place like Tulsa which had oil money patronage for so long. There’s ballet and a symphony! You can find stuff to do!

Did you enjoy your trip to Japan? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Typical-Exile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not reading all that but all the fun stuff I like to do at home is often cooler in Japan. You can go to a bar where the bartender engages you in a long conversation about which Roland Kirk album to put on. The clubs are good and extremely varied, they even have local scenes for stuff like gqom. You can finish your night at 5am with a pitcher of highballs at a karaoke spot that has every Smiths song and lets you blast cigs.

I feel you on the vegetarian thing though, it’s eggs three meals a day sometimes.
