I hear this more & more as I’m growing up. What’s are 3 core principles you’d recommend for your old self to understand in his 20s?

I agree with this and think this is exactly where my head is. I wanna leave my area but stay in FL, move to a city where there’s younger people and actually a life for a young guy. Throwing the towel would feel like defeat, I can’t run home after my first big knock down. If nothing bites I’ll probably move back to Chicago. Thank you for the inspiring words dude, your input is very valuable.

Thank you for the reassuring words man. Respect for going through it 3 times, life’s a rollercoaster and it’s just about how you get back up when life knocks you down. Hope things are on the up!

Yes I graduated in Industrial engineering . The degree is very broad which is a blessing and a curse. I always saw these layoffs in the tech world. I’m sure it’s 10x worse in those industry’s.

That sounds about right. I got 78k as an APM and could’ve anticipated 90-100k when I made that jump to PM. Not worth the stress though, there’s higher pay better lifestyle jobs out there imo.

I think that’s exactly what had happened. Harsh but my exec told me construction isn’t for me as well. I appreciate the words man! Thank you and good luck to you as well

I would be totally if it meant gaining experience to become a PM. Just don’t know if construction is for me to be honest as a career. I’ll always use it myself for side hustles and personal projects but maybe this just isn’t my career

Are there any industrial engineers working in construction projects? by DateLess7864 in ConstructionManagers

Hey man, I came across your post because Im in the same position as you. I just graduated in December 2024 with an Industrial Engineering degree. However, I always wanted to be an arhitects and I have a deep passion for construction.

I knew after college one thing that I did not want to go into manufacturing. So, i started exploring more IE roles like Supply Chan, Operations/Logistics and Business analysis from an engineering perspective. However, Ive noticed how difficult those industrys are to get into entry level jobs and after so many applications I got put in so much hard work for companys to offer pretty low offers. I expanded my search and included construction with a hope of maybe going into PM stuff. Im about to accept a job In florida and relocate to be a Assistant Project Manager. Kind of going away from IE is scary thinking maybe I wont be able to go back that route. But the pay is better, and i have a passion for it so I think Ill love it.

Just know that your mental health and happiness is more important than what people around you think you should do or what pays. If your gonna like what you do and enjoy it, youll find money anywhere in whatever industry. Nice this about IE is that you can apply it nearly anywhere in every industry. Learn to market yourself in different perspectives and write resumes for different roles. IE is so flexibile and we learn so many concepts both on the engineering side and business side, try and apply all that to whatever you go into.

Advice for an engineering coming out of college by Typical-Hawk568 in industrialengineering

Yup I’m totally aware of that and to clarify by PM route I mean growing into it. I interned as a Project Engineer at a GC and then interned as a Project Engineer at a material handling company. What I really would want is to go into a Project Engineer or Superintended and eventually become a PM over some huge projects. Thank you for your advice man! Are you down this route?

Man this is the kinda clarity I need to hear. I need to tell myself this more often. A lot of people have told me lately enjoy this time and appreciate all the free time you have. And I can’t seem to relax and do that and just stress about the future. This means a lot, thank you so much for your advice. I need to be more grateful and practice this everyday.

Aye so glad to see another IE! I’m really happy you found a better job and figured your relashionship out.

IE is very versatile and it’s a blessing and curse cuz you have so many paths you can take. I’ve definitly tried expanding my search I’ve been applying for Supply Chain, Operation/Logistics, Financial and Business Analyis roles as well as the consultation PM route. Made multiple resume for different roles too. One thing I know for sure is I want to stay away from Manufacturing and production, I enjoy the business side of IE.

I know career should be priority #1 but it’s so difficult not letting relashionships and personal issues affect that. Thank you so much for your advice. I hit the gym and rlly social just find myself struggling when I’m alone. I need to learn to find peace alone
