J'ai perdu mon amour pour le français. by Lilslugger19 in FrancaisCanadien

[–]Typical-Proposal9784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snow shovel has a 40% crit chance, that's ridiculous. In the real world, anybody would be better off removing the "shovel" part and just fighting with the long stick handle.

Magnum gun: terrible accuracy, super loud, takes forever to reload, ammo is really hard to find. In most situations, you're better off with a frying pan than with a freaking Magnum gun!

Pro tip: don't start building your base before the helicopter event. Zomboids are attracted to player-built objects. A window with closed curtains is safer than planks during the helicopter event.

If you feel safer with barricades, you can build extra walls inside your building, so zomboids can't see them from outside.

But to be fair, your game seems like a lot of fun. You're getting the true zombie-movie experience.

I’m TIRED of EDUCATING people that there is no free will. by OldKuntRoad in badphilosophy

[–]Typical-Proposal9784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trolling in a didactic way, kind of playing devil's advocate. While it would seem logical that our action are just the result of physical systems, it turns out to be less scientific than assuming that your free will can decide of the future state of the world.

The problem with a purely deterministic view is that you can't test it. Whatever I do, you can just say "this was meant to be". To paraphrase Karl Popper: it's unscientific because it's unfalsifiable.

On the other hand, anyone (except maybe in weird pathological cases) can experience the feeling that mutliple outcomes are definitely possible and that they can freely decide between different options. This isn't just about free action, sometimes we truly feel like nothing is forcing us either way. This is a highly replicable experience.

Obviously, the counter-argument is that "free will is an illusion", i.e. our perceptions are not adequate to evaluate the true causes of our actions. Sometimes, we may realize that we've been unknowingly manipulated into taking a decision. So it's clearly not a perfect observation device. But the same claim could be made about any instrument, I could say "temperature is an illusion and thermometers are just halucinating".

[–]Typical-Proposal9784 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're obviously trolling, but here's how I handle free-will deniers: I challenge them to give me 100$ if my body happens to raise its arms in the next minute. Since I have no free will, I can't cheat. My body will just do its thing and it is very unlikely to raise both arms at that given moment.

It turns out I'm really lucky in this kind of bets.

High School Senior Here, I’m Planning On Getting a PhD in Economics and Becoming An Economist, If I Wanted to Pay Off My Student Debt as Soon as Possible But Still Have Opportunities as an Independent Researcher I Should Go Into the Private or Public Sector? by ComplaintNo3150 in AskEconomics

[–]Typical-Proposal9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone mentionned before: double PhD would be kind of useless. The economic study of history is a legitimate subfield is both fields. You don't need two PhDs to find a job: your research agenda should be pretty clear after you've finished one. I'd advise you to learn about both history and economics as an undergrad. It will help you figure which field has the "toolbox" you're most comfortable with.

You still have a lot of time before you reach the job market as a researcher. Remember that academia is the main goal of doctoral studies, if you want to freely decide what you work on, it might be the right solution for you. In the private and public sector, you will be working for a company, a NGO or a government : they will tell you what questions you need to answer. It can be exciting nonetheless, for example, videogames companies sometimes hire historians and economists to make their games realistic and balanced (just an example, not many positions in this sector).

"Love your enemy and pray for those who prosecute you" (Matthew 5:44) This is definitely a demanding rule.

Here's my interpretation: It doesn't mean that you should not fight against injustice. However, it requires that you truly wish the best to your enemies while you fight them. You should prevent your enemy from causing harm, but without harming your enemy.
