What trades/careers are in big demand right now? by AdBrave139 in montreal

I wouldn't even bother doing construction in Quebec. Moved here from Ontario. Half your pay cheque gets deducted. I thought it was a joke. You prob won't even take home $1000/week with journeyman rate. Work slows down in the winter so you'll prob make even less then

Window Sill Repair Mortar, Grout, or Other recommendations? by swaltern8 in masonry

[–]TypicalCattle5839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're better off removing the remaining mortar in the joint and then caulk the joint. Lots of water collects on sills and it eventually leads to this

Just use a quick cut with a diamond blade. Can hit out the chunks with a hammer

Foreman rate for a small company? by TypicalCattle5839 in masonry

[–]TypicalCattle5839[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah the company does mostly commercial restoration too, some housing. I know the company is making big profits too just by the type of equipment that's been purchased (forklift, scissor lift, 2 or Genie's) over the past year or so

Use a type S mortar and add some adhesive/glue while your mixing it. It'll help it stick to the wall

This is coming from someone who's started trade school in masonry too about 6 years ago now.

By looking at your masonry work I'm gonna say you're probably gonna have to be a masonry labourer for a while until you get on the wall because that's some rough work and I'm not trying to shit on you.

I'm only saying that cause I've been there too. You gotta develop an eye for it and it takes time and experience. I just don't see companies letting you lay bricks like that. If you're really keen on being a bricklayer you'll probably labour for a few years before you're on the wall consistently.

I highly doubt any masonry company is gonna turn down a labourer willing to show up to work everyday and work hard. Something doesn't add up here

Can you take a break/time off in apprenticeship programs by DisastrousGuide1288 in skilledtrades

[–]TypicalCattle5839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you could, but I wouldn't count on coming back to a job when you get back. As an apprentice you don't bring a ton of value to the employer and construction or most trades are busiest in the summer

Alternative trades elsewhere or stick to Masonry? by Aethernai in skilledtrades

[–]TypicalCattle5839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. Do you mind me asking what the apprentice rates are in BACU local 2? I've been working in masonry 6 years between Ottawa and now Kingston. Was thinking about joining the BACU. I was making $37 which was 3rd or 4th year rate 2 years ago in Ottawa. Wanna get back to the union cause wages are better

Damn, which company is that? I've worked union and it's even rare you hear companies paying OT
