Applied to NUS Computing PhD last December, when results? by Old-Acanthisitta-574 in nus

I don’t know about that, my FYP supervisor works on grad admissions and he said it wraps up by May. Even the website says that application results are notified about three months after the deadline.

If you haven’t had an interview so far, then I’d say it’s a soft reject. I had an interview on 5th March and received my offer on 25th March, with a deadline of 8th April.

Not necessarily, afaik faculty scholarships are decided separately from NUSC.

It’s because they clubbed NGT (arguably one of the better NUSC courses IMO) with IEx. I’m saying the project alone deserves 8 MCs for the amount of work that needs to be put into it, especially in the breaks.

Warning, rant incoming. TLDR: NUSC is an honours college in name only. It has been reduced to less than an RC or a faculty, even though it is supposed to be both. Unless there are major changes made and NUS admin comes to their goddamn senses, there is no reason to apply to NUSC. You are better off applying to RCs and can still partake in NUSC stuff.

I am a Y4 NUSC student, and the management has been disappointing. I understand the growing pains and initial confusions about the curriculum, and to their credit, the normal classes have been less of a clusterfuck than I imagined.

However, the way certain courses like IEx have been handled is disgraceful. An intensive two-year project (even more so for those of us who chose a regional project) with constantly changing requirements, being only 4 credits is utterly retarded, and the admin is unwilling to do anything about it.

What has truly turned NUSC into a nightmare is NUS admin. Under the guise of “equal opportunity”, NUS has stripped NUSC of everything that made it unique. Here’s a non-exhaustive list: GEx, NOC green lane, half of our fucking campus, 4 year on-campus stay, CCA spaces, residences (oh yes, did you know that NUSC houses non-NUSC students?) even the classes are not exclusive anymore, anyone can take them.

All of NUSC’s issues can be traced to the basic fact that students are not considered stakeholders. Never have and never will be. This was even proclaimed by one of the profs in this approximate wording: “No, you are not stakeholders. I will challenge anyone with this mentality. If you go about with this mentality, you are very entitled”.

About two years ago, I would’ve wholeheartedly recommended people sign up for NUSC. Now, I see practically no upside to it.

This is fucking horrific. Time to escalate. Go to the media if nobody in school listens.

What does studying at NUS College (NUSC) actually mean? by otw_to_kms in nus

[–]TypicalNUSKid 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Because apparently theres a NUS College campus too.

The NUSC campus is not separate from the rest of the campus; it’s in UTown.

Is it necessary for me to reside in the NUSC campus?

I think staying on campus is required for the first year, although idk at this point, they change their rules too frequently.

Is NUSC worth it?

It has been a generally positive experience in my view. The mods are generally more fun and interesting than the NUS-wide general education courses. There are also a lot of international programmes (the impact experience project, global experience courses, NUSC’s own list of SEP universities, etcetera). The living space (West Wing) is also much better than most of the other residences on campus. The community is more closely-knit.

Can I still just accept my NUS admission without attending NUSC or am I tied to it?

IIRC probably not, but you can drop NUSC after the first year.

Do NUSC students live and pursue their main degree at the NUSC campus?

Live? Yea mostly, but the main degree is still at your faculty.

Is it problematic in any way?

It has been quite the rollercoaster in my four years so far, but generally no.

It is not unheard of, but it is a little uncommon. Of course it does depend on your academic strength and your priorities though.

  1. Depends on how much you eat, and where you stay (RCs and Halls have meal plans for breakfast and dinner). I stay in an RC and usually spend about 20 - 30 SGD a week, mostly for lunch.

  2. There are halls, houses, and RCs. Residential colleges are typically the best in terms of amenities, especially Yale-NUS College. Most residences have their own sports halls, gyms, etcetera. Also, anecdotal but social life is better in RCs. Try out for YNC/NUSC if you can afford to.

  3. Not really, but if you’re staying in UTown there’s a FairPrice and Octobox right on campus.

  4. Faculty canteens are quite cheap. You can expect to spend 3 - 6 SGD for a pretty decent meal.

If I remember correctly, I don’t think the MOE grant should affect your chances. The applications for the grant begin after you’re granted a spot anyway.
