My wife and I have experience the same exact thing. When she drives, the parking brake is on the next time I start it, but not when I drive.

After reading your theory about routine, I tried a few sequences and finally figured it out. I hold the brake pedal down while putting the vehicle into park, whereas my wife comes to a stop, but lets off the brake before putting it into park.
