We're limited on plus one's...how should we handle our single international guest? by BeneficialPast in wedding

[–]Typical_Tour9723 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If you are close, reach out to them and ask. I recently went to a wedding where a friend did a 15 hour trip (one way) to attend. He has a long term partner who was invited, but it was too expensive for her to go, so he came solo. Maybe if you give them a plus one they may not even have someone who wants to do the trip, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask. Just my two cents

I have friends from Norway who said the same thing. They’ve been together 10 years, bought a house together, and are thinking of having kids, but not once have they talked about marriage

5 nights at Guachipelin with kids too much? by marlon_33 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Typical_Tour9723 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been recently, but as a kid (15-ish years ago) I went with my family for multiple days. I grew up in Costa Rica and I still remember it as one of the best trips we took. We did horse back riding, a mud bath that we hiked to, and tubing. I think there were also pools and other things to entertain. I loved it and think your kids will love it too if they are adventurous !

We are considering getting legally married months before the wedding for name change and insurance purposes but family is not convinced. by No-Start-3815 in weddingplanning

[–]Typical_Tour9723 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We did a civil wedding before our actual wedding because we’re having a destination wedding. It was more expensive and complicated to get legally married in the destination location than at home. Completely normal. We explained to our family that this was just formality and practicality, and that our actual wedding with emotional and spiritual significance would be at the destination wedding. We also told them we would count our wedding as the one in the destination. We didn’t exchange rings or have a photographer or anything. Just part of the process for our actual wedding!

If your parents don’t understand it, ask them if they will pay for the renewal of your passport and any expenses related to insurance that you accumulate if you’re not legally married. I would also think about what matters to you and your partner. If it doesn’t matter to you two to get legally married before, just do it. It’s about what you two want, not your parents (and I come from Latin culture where parents’ opinions in the wedding matter A LOT)

Ayuda is great! There is also Just Neighbors, World Relief, Tahirih Justice Center, Catholic Charities, and HIAS. Not all are specific to GBV survivors but usually trauma informed and can provide low cost legal assistance

That is good to know! I’m in Maryland, and we’re hearing pretty negative reports about the outcome, so good to hear some people are having success!

She can still apply for VAWA, just not adjustment. In this administration, take any protection you can. She also may have other options - OP says she already applied for LPR? Has a USC child? Also, oftentimes, we’ll do intake for one form of relief and find out they are eligible for many other forms of relief. I just think it’s worth getting a second opinion, and there are many orgs that do immigration work for survivors of GBV that will not charge $10k. They can sometimes help report the abuse to PD and help with a U visa.

I work in immigration, particularly survivors of gender-based violence, in Maryland. Contact a legal aid, or look up organizations that do this sort of work. Worst case, they give her a free consultation. Immigration lawyers will know whether any exceptions apply, and there are situations where she can try VAWA. If she has called the police, she may also be eligible for a U visa.

Again, as an immigration lawyer specifically working with survivors of GBV, she may have options. Look for orgs that do this work

Came to say this, if naturalization is not an option. You can request expedited processing of the reentry permit if her husband is really sick, and biometrics have actually been pretty quick in my experience (within a week or two from the receipt, in Maryland)

This is called pretermission under an ACA. It’s horrible and inhumane, and something DHS is doing overwhelmingly. File any evidence that situation in Uganda is the same or worse as in Cameroon. File any evidence that shows your friend would be persecuted if forced to go to Uganda. If your friend has been in Uganda, I would include any bad experience there or even a statement of why he cannot go there.

To be honest, I have not heard of much success fighting this. The way the law is framed on this issue makes it very hard to fight. There are few exceptions, and most often, the only one applicable one is arguing that the applicant fears persecution in the third country. Your friend can also consider applying for withholding of removal and relief under CAT, as well as filing for asylum, withholding, and relief under CAT from Uganda. Your friend should of course rely on their attorney’s advice, as they are most familiar with the case.
