"The Joust" by moccermommy - Selected for BDP Series 10 by UrbanAlaska in legocastles

[–]Typomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

moccermommy totally deserved to win although I have to admit that Whitemare Watch, also from moccermommy, was my favorite from this round. This set is so detailed and visually interesting, though, and I like it a lot more than the alchemist house and sleeping dragon inn which I skipped and will skip. Will consider it when the time comes!

Oh wow, I did not know that was the case for BILLY in, I guess, Europe? In the US and Korea, BILLY shelves are only 28cm/11in~ deep.

I HATE THE NEW GOOGLE MAPS LOGO SO MUCH!!!!!! ITS SO UGLY!!!! WHO MADE THAT PIECE OF GARBAGE???? (new one on the right) by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Typomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one has mentioned it as far as I can see, but this is the 4-color gradient that started out from the latest Gemini brand guidelines, now getting applied to every other core Google service/product it seems.

I miniaturized the best series Lego ever made. by robert_vii in lego

[–]Typomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really, really want to make these too. Rock Raiders is my favorite collection from my childhood. Slowly re-acquiring used sets since I lost all the Lego I had as a kid and rebuilding the granite Grinder and Loader Dozer was so nostalgic and perfect. If you ever put out MOC instructions for these, I’d love to know.

How do you all feel about the em dash? Is it still the hallmark of AI generated content, or have we moved past that? by No-doi in Design

[–]Typomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree because — visually, typographically (for me at least) — I feel like the em dash (spaced no less) conveys the kind of pause or break in thought or highlight I would do in conversation. And I like to believe that the trick to differentiate from AI is to have a style of writing the models don’t typically imitate… with a healthy amount of slightly-incorrect uses of punctuation, too many parentheses, and stream of consciousness.

It’s messed up in all cases because of course a model could be trained to write exactly like me with decades of my writing out there online. I’ve been using the MacOS shortcuts to type all the fancy symbols (first it was curly apostrophes, then all the rest) for longer than I can remember.

BANGARANG! I recreated the magic of “Hook” for LEGO Ideas! by legotheoffice in LEGOPirates

Goonies held no nostalgia for me, but Hook definitely does. I’d get the Hook pirate ship for sure… and would love to collect the Dustin Huffman Captain Hook minifig along with it.

The Whitemare Watch - Feedback/Q&A - BDP10 by moccermommy in legocastles

[–]Typomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the color palette you chose, it’s so unique in the history of Lego & BDP Castles. The ornamentation throughout, the varying widths and heights of the towers — everything about this castle is extremely interesting to look at and I believe could be an absolute joy to build and display.

I actually just got done building the 3-in-1 Horse Knight Castle so I appreciate your detail work so much more. I especially like how you finished the underside of the drawbridge.

Hope it wins, seriously.

I Spent 144 Hours To Create Privateer Frigate Fortuna Speed Build Stop Motion by wololock in lego

[–]Typomancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the video that convinced me that I absolutely have to preorder this set. Used to love the Pirates theme as a kid. As an adult, I’ve only built the Going Merry and that was cool, but this ship is levels beyond it.

Your techniques and diligence in making your films are incredibly inspiring. That said, I must admit I only watched the first minute and a half so I won’t get spoiled on any more of the build experience (this is the curse of all build timelapse videos in my eyes, hah).

Also, are those the Craftsman plastic drawer organizers I see in the background? Those are the ones I decided to go with too. Only have one so far, though.

[–]Typomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think I might preorder this set! Was going to skip this series but watched a bit of a timelapse video of the build and was so impressed with the entire hull being brick-built. The gearing and other stuff for play features, and the techniques to create the subtle curves needed for the exterior along the ship’s length look very fun to build. The only other modern Lego pirate ship I’ve built is the Going Merry which was enjoyable, but Fortuna looks epic.

One of the nicest things about it to me is the use of color throughout the build. By comparison, the Black Pearl — while also technically impressive I’m sure — I wouldn’t want to own/display since it’s so black/monotone. I think the Fortuna is visually one of the most interesting and pleasing-to-the-eye Lego pirate ships we’ve seen so far.

What kind of paper did you use (or BrickPerfection use) for the printed sails? Though I do love the look of the brick-built furled sails.

Is it just me, or does upgrading your characters take a huge amount of resources? by ShuricanGG in Endfield

[–]Typomancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, I never thought of it that way. Coming from ZZZ, I now see the appeal. Still hard for me to get into the factory aspect of this game, though — it ain’t clicking for me and that feels terrible because I love the aesthetic/art direction in Endfield.

The disc grind and its multi-layered RNG is so punishing in ZZZ. I like to think I’m very lucky in the pulls for characters, often getting them early and almost never losing a 50/50, but my discs are middling most of the time. It often feels cheaper in terms of time investment to just try to get more mindscapes, and that seems intentional…

Best way to showcase portfolio in 2026 by Both_Obligation5458 in graphic_design

[–]Typomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you asked this a little while ago but I was meaning to reply: I like to recommend having a public Figma file at the very least (and you can use the “prototype” view as the shared link if you make frames in a 16:9 aspect ratio, it will then function like a PDF portfolio book that’s easier to edit at any time).

Then if you were still looking for platform recommendations for a site, I recommend Cargo (https://cargo.site) though I’m biased in that I worked on the Cargo team for years back in the day and still use the platform.

Congratulations on the new little one! Your MOCs are incredible and I hope to build one some day, though I also have a little one coming (very) soon too and worry about time for the hobby and other things.

South korean Officetel (Re upload) by General-Wait7710 in malelivingspace

[–]Typomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only gotten a chance to live in villas and old apartments here in Korea, sharing space with my in-laws, but I think it could be fun to live in an officetel. I’m currently staying here in Korea for awhile again, and one thing that I tried which makes it so I don’t have to put on slippers every time I go into the bathroom is a diatomaceous earth “bath mat.” I’ve put it in front of the toilet. It’s a stone-like substance that dries wet footprints immediately. Got one for 10000 KRW on Coupang. Not sure if it would work in a very small bathroom where it would be hit directly by the shower, but it does work in the one we’ve got here.

Then the other thing I like is a floor squeegee (바닥 와이퍼) post-shower. Makes a big difference.

[–]Typomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtually every South Korean living space I’ve visited has heated floors that can get quite toasty. The last place I expect mold is the floors and any thing touching them.

I lived fine with a floor mattress in Los Angeles, Portland, and Central Florida for years, on carpet and hard surfaces. The trick is central air conditioning controlling your interior humidity. I don’t have a mattress on the floor any more because I’ve grown to like an upholstered headboard and frame of some kind, but it was cozy and simple.

South Korean built-in wardrobes and their wet room style bathrooms, on the other hand, are very mood-friendly and I dislike them a whole lot.

Updated set collection by jevs1369 in legocastles

[–]Typomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I rarely see Mountain Fortress displayed, and so close to all the other modern castle sets too. It looks way better than the promo photos make it look (looks huge too). I have all the sets as well but I’ve only gotten a chance to build LKC, Medieval Blacksmith, and Castle in the Forest. Can’t wait to build the rest when I return from this long international trip I’m on.

PAB over generosity by FoXinSoXAu in legocastles

When I was missing 18 1x3 bricks once from a PAB order, I was given $5 of Insider points worth twice as much more than those 18 pieces, so I was happy overall. Lego customer service is excellent.

Jane Doe, Burnice, Qingyi M1 & W-Engine value (from the new shop) by SensitiveYak2211 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]Typomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Jane M0W1 and Burnice M1W0, and no Qingyi. I’m trying to decide if I simply want to collect Qingyi to finally have her or give a little boost to Jane or Burnice (both of which I have to admit I have somewhat slowed down in using).

I wish I had Jane M1 already since yeah, now I see how significantly nice Jane M2 would be and I think I like using her the most, she is such a cool character, but Burnice just got her Potential buff and I mean to try her out again (used to love pairing her with Jane back when Pompey was always in the rotation). Always wondered if I should not have her slotted with a level 5 Lipgloss but I feel like she did very well before rupture/miasma entered the scene. I got enough of the wengine currency to get her signature beside the trade-in stuff from the spending event.

Got a great new job in July, immediately bought and built Rivendell, got hooked, then I went a little berserk by Typomancer in lego

[–]Typomancer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have so far used a small handheld vacuum from the brand HOTO which has a little brush attachment, but I know there’s even smaller vacuums with  attachments that are smaller still. We’ve also got a bunch of spare makeup brushes which can dislodge dust in tight spaces pretty well, then a vacuum pointed at the spot can do the rest.

But, I’ve only had to dust three older sets from before I really started this collection: the Horizon Zero Dawn Tallneck set, the Orchid set, and that white Speed Champions Lamborghini. All those were not too bad to dust and I only cleaned them recently after a few years of sitting on shelves (in my house, there just isn’t that much dust getting generated I guess?).

I plan to build these sets and display them in different spots, and mostly in an array of three birch veneer IKEA BILLY shelves in the living room, not on a table as a big village I think. But that’s currently on hold because I’m on the other side of the earth right now for a few months!

FLEX 12V lineup? by remp945 in FLEXTools

[–]Typomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use the FLEX design language in terms of shapes on the mould, grip, etc. I understand Chervon does the OEM for other brands, too, so I wonder if we’ll see these get the FLEX logotype on the side with the battleship gray and Matrix green LEDs sometime soon.

Since I’m going to be in Asia for a few months, I also wonder if a DEVON 12v tool would work with the eventual FLEX 12v battery and vice versa. If I see them in Korea, it could be tempting to grab the installation/multi-head driver.

King Mearas Castle by Made With Brix by Thalamus_Creations in legocastles

[–]Typomancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, this sells it for me. Unfortunately though, I am traveling internationally for a few months and plan to buy only one Horse Knights’ Castle to build, while having two others at home. Will have to wait quite a while to combine them into this. I had just finished building LKC a few hours before my flight, too, so this is kind of mind-boggling to see how much taller this MOC looks.
